Costco makes major payment change after testing new method with employees – and shoppers say ‘finally’

COSTCO has made a major change to its payment policy after testing the method with employees.

Shoppers gave mixed reactions to the reveal, with many wondering how it actually worked, and others praising the move.

A Costco customer on the social media platform Reddit revealed to users that Costco had added the shop card option to digital wallets.

This means that you can use your Costco card in the app now, so your physical card will no longer be valid.

If you have a Costco gift card for example, you will only be able to use it in the app and not physically.

The Reddit post came with a picture that showed that it looks like, allowing you to access the card from the account section.

One commenter on the thread explained a little about how it works.

They wrote: “I just added a shop card to my account.

“Seems like the balance is actually transferred from the card you add to your Costco wallet.

“So the physical card will no longer have a balance when you add it to your digital wallet.”

Someone else added to this comment, suggesting that it should be seen more as a transfer of funds rather than an addition.

This is because you don’t lose any cash between the physical card and the app, it is only put on your phone instead.

CUSTOMER REACTION

This has just been made available to customers after employees were testing it out.

There were some who were relieved to see the change.

An eager commenter simply wrote: “My god, finally.”

Others had more questions about the tech, which led to some useful questions being answered in the thread.

Costco’s membership scanners

Costco has unveiled membership scanners at its store entrances.

In August 2024, the retailer released a statement about the scanners on its website.

“Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse,” it wrote.

“Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner.

“Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member for entry.

“If you have any questions or concerns, there will always be an attendant at the door to assist you!

“If your membership is inactive, expired, or you would like to sign up for a new membership, the attendant will ask that you stop by the membership counter prior to entering the warehouse to shop.

“Additionally, if your membership card does not have a photo, please be prepared to show your valid photo ID.

“We encourage you to stop by the membership counter to have a photo taken to have on your card.”

For example, one person wanted to know if you could use multiple gift cards on the app.

Another commenter confirmed this was possible.

Someone else confirmed that there was a tutorial prompt when they loaded up the wallet for the first time with the gift card now there.

And one person asked if you could use it at the Costco food court.

They asked: “Ok, so can we use these at the food court then?

“I just joined last week and this was confusing the heck out of me.

“The front desk said it should work and the employee at the food court was like what are you talking about.”

It led to this response: “Food court registers are configured to not take a membership number so there’s no way for them to scan your QR code to tie in this balance.”

This was confirmed by another person on the thread: “Self-service kiosks at my store don’t have membership scanners.”
