Major US airport loses airline as it abandons city – but travelers can get money back

A MAJOR airline used by millions of passengers has confirmed it will be ending all flights to and from a popular American airport.

JetBlue bosses revealed flights to and from Miami airport will come to an end.

Currently, the carrier offers up to two daily flights between Boston and the Florida city.

Passengers already scheduled on flights needn’t despair as the change will take place on September 3, as per the Miami Herald.

Travelers set to be impacted by the action taken by airline bosses will have two options.

One option is that they will be able to have a refund if they were booked on a now-canceled flight.

Or, they will be able to change their point of departure on their boarding pass.

Travelers will be given the option to fly out of Fort Lauderdale airport – located around 34 miles from Miami.

Derek Dombrowski told the outlet that the Boston to Miami flights had become unprofitable.

JetBlue is not abandoning Florida entirely as flights will also continue from West Palm Beach airport.

But, the carrier is not just cutting flights to Miami.

The company will soon be offering seasonal flights between New York John F. Kennedy airport and Seattle.

Currently, travelers can take advantage of a year-round program.

JetBlue offers flights to more than 100 cities across the US and Caribbean and the carrier was used by more than 40 million people at its peak before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bosses have admitted the carrier is struggling financially.

Joanna Geraghty, the airline’s CEO, admitted it is taking longer than anticipated for the company to be profitable.

“That means we’re still relying on borrowed cash to keep the airline running,” she said in a memo seen by CNBC.

The flight changes come just months after bosses unveiled new routes.

This year, JetBlue is launching flights to destinations including Halifax, Canada, and San Pedro Sula, Honduras, according to the company.

One daily flight to Halifax will start from June 26.

Chiefs also confirmed that routes to the Caribbean hotspot Santo Domingo, and Los Angeles, will be relaunched.

Earlier this year, bosses relaunched its daily JFK to Washington DC service.

Daily JetBlue flights from Boston to Edinburgh, and Boston to Madrid started in May.

Both routes are being offered for the summer season.

In 2024, JetBlue was at the center of a potential deal, involving the carrier and Spirit Airlines.

But, the merger, which would’ve been worth $3.8 million, hit the brakes after a judge ruled that competition would be impacted.

Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy months after the deal fell through.

In March, the company exited bankruptcy and Ted Christie, the carrier’s CEO, unveiled the business‘ strategy to “redefine low-fare travel.”

But, Silver Airlines has gone extinct after no bids were submitted for the carrier at an auction.

The carrier faced an uncertain future after filing for bankruptcy in December 2024.

How does bankruptcy work?

Bankruptcy is a specific legal process that helps companies eliminate debt they can’t repay.

The process allows businesses to start fresh and gain access to new credit.

Supervised by federal courts, bankruptcies allow a company to sell off its assets more easily to pay off creditors, according to Investopedia.

Chapter 11, a common process for companies, is used to restructure a business with the goal of remaining open – even if it means selling off most of the company’s properties.

Chapter 7, on the other hand, sells all of a company’s assets, putting it out of business.

Chapter 15, alternatively, allows for collaboration between American and foreign courts to conduct bankruptcy proceedings with “parties of interest involving more than one country,” per the United States Courts.
