Ayutthaya police are investigating the death of an unidentified man found in the Raphiphat Canal in Phachi district yesterday. The inquiry is focusing on migrant worker communities in the vicinity.
The deceased, estimated to be between 40 and 60 years old, had grey hair and was approximately 160 to 170 centimetres tall. A floral-patterned cloth was wrapped around his torso, and his hands were bound.
An initial examination showed no visible signs of trauma, and it was estimated that the body had been in the water for six to 10 hours. A rescue volunteer from the Ayutthaya Ruamjai Association first noticed the body drifting in the canal. Locals did not recognise the man.
The canal connects various districts in Ayutthaya and the neighbouring Saraburi province. Police are collaborating with local officials in Saraburi and nearby districts to investigate reports of missing persons. They have also inspected construction camps and migrant worker accommodations near the site of the discovery.
There have been no missing person reports matching the description of the deceased. Police teams from provincial and regional units are concentrating their investigation on migrant worker groups residing along the canal’s upper reaches. They are checking fingerprint records to identify the victim, who could potentially be an illegal migrant worker, reported Bangkok Post.
Investigators noted that the floral cloth binding, the man’s black sports shorts, and the condition of his finger and toenails suggest he was a labourer who may have died from non-violent causes, with his body quickly wrapped and discarded to avoid legal issues. However, foul play has not been ruled out.
Police are awaiting detailed autopsy results from the Institute of Forensic Science in Pathum Thani to determine the cause of death and possibly confirm the man’s identity.
In similar news, the body of a 72 year old woman was recovered from the Bang Yai Canal, more than a day after she was reported missing. Her shoes were later discovered near the canal in Phuket Town, raising fears she had fallen into the water.
