Severe weather possible this weekend

SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — We are preparing for a hot and humid start to the weekend and the potential for severe weather across portions of the region.

First, on radar we are tracking a few scattered showers and thunderstorms west of Pierre. These are expected to diminish as they move east this morning.

It will be a warmer day in Sioux Falls. Here’s a look at the latest short-term forecast.

This week has been active across much of the region. You can see the more intense areas of heavy rain in the orange and red on the map below.

We are not done with the active weather. You can see the severe weather outlook for late this afternoon and evening below. All modes of severe weather are possible with any supercell storms that develop.

More severe weather is expected tomorrow. Some of this outlook will depend on how tonight’s thunderstorms evolve. With the very high heat and humidity in place, severe weather is expected in clusters, with damaging winds one of the biggest threats.

Take a look at Futurecast in the video below. Notice we have much hotter weather in western SD. Scattered storms will develop in that zone between Pierre and Rapid City. We expect some of the storms to produce very large hail, wind gusts over 70mph, and even an isolated tornado is possible. These storms are expected to weaken late this evening and overnight as they move toward I-29. New storms will be possible tomorrow as temperatures soar into the 90s in much of central and eastern KELOLAND. The humidity will be particularly high across the east. That means the heat index will be very high as well, near 100 in the southeast. We expect storms to fire along the cold front late in the day and any of those storms could become severe as they try to build south and east. There will be a cap in place on the atmosphere, so there remains a degree of uncertainty on how many storms develop.

Here are the details of the forecast.
