Jackley planning to run for SD’s U.S. House seat

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is looking to head to Washington.

Jackley told KELOLAND News Friday he is planning to run in 2026 for South Dakota’s lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Republican Dusty Johnson, of Mitchell, currently occupies the seat which will be open 2026 along with every other seat in the U.S. House.

After serving as South Dakota’s attorney general from 2009 to 2019, the 54-year-old Jackley was elected in 2022 to again serve in that role. Jackley lost to former South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem in 2018’s Republican gubernatorial primary.

Jackley has a bachelor’s degree from South Dakota Mines and a law degree from the University of South Dakota. He lives in Pierre.

KELOLAND News will have thoughts from Jackley later Friday.

Johnson has not announced plans to run for re-election for U.S. House. He has, however, shared that he is considering a gubernatorial run.

“Certainly getting a lot of encouragement across the state to run for governor,” Johnson said April 22. “I’m not worried about that right now. I do give it a little bit of consideration every once in a while, but day in and day out, I really need to be focused on my day job.”

According to Jackley’s latest campaign finance report filed in January, he had more than $500,000 cash on hand.
