THE Kansas City Chiefs have paid an emotional tribute to Joe Delaney 42 years on from his tragic death.
Delaney passed away in June 1983 while attempting to rescue three struggling children from a pond at Critter’s Creek in Monroe, Louisiana.
Although he was unable to swim, the running back jumped into the water to save them.
The children were stuck in a water hole left by construction work, which was not intended for swimming.
Delaney was able to save one, who escaped the pond without any injuries.
Another was transported to hospital, but later passed away.
Police then recovered the body of Delaney and the remaining child.
The Kansas City Chiefs player was just 24-years-old at the time of his death.
Delaney was remembered 42 years on from his tragic passing by NFL fans, journalists and teams on Sunday.
The Chiefs paid tribute to him with a social media post which read: “42 years ago today, Joe Delaney tragically passed away a hero, attempting to save three children from drowning. We’ll never forget his sacrifice,” with a red heart emoji.
ESPN journalist Adam Schefter wrote: “Forever hero.”
While a fan commented: “Joe Delaney deserves a special spot in the @nfl Hall of Fame as a hero.”
Delaney joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 1981 after being selected in the second round of the NFL draft.
He spent two seasons with the team before his death.
Since the running back’s passing, no Chiefs player has worn his number, No37.
