I went from being homeless to become Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts quarterback mentor – I slept in my car

QUINCY Avery used to sleep in his car and in a team locker room.

He ate the same Taco Bell dinner for less than $4 every day to get by.

But he went on to train some of the best quarterbacks in the country including Super Bowl champions.

Avery, 39, is owner of Quarterback Takeover, a finishing school for signal callers.

His biggest clients over the years are Kansas City Chiefs leader Patrick Mahomes and reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts.

According to an interview he gave with the Daily Mail, Avery and his team have worked with over 700 quarterbacks.

More than 150 of them have gone on to earn college scholarships.

And some have made it all the way to the top.

Avery’s first step was an unpaid assistant role with the UCLA Bruins.

He would work near 20-hour days from 4.30am until midnight.

And Avery would sleep in the team locker room when he got a chance to put his head down.

He spent almost a year sleeping in his car and on a friend’s sofa.

Avery also searched for clients to begin his quarterback coaching company.

The 39-year-old’s remarkable rise has been made the subject of a Hulu documentary.

Avery worked with Mahomes when he was still in college at Texas Tech.

The quarterback was the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

He is now considered one of the greatest of all time already at the age of 29.

Mahomes has won three Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs in five appearances on the biggest stage.

Avery spoke to PEOPLE earlier this year about the experience of working with Mahomes.

He said, “To be able to say you worked at one point with the best quarterback in the world, it’s really cool.

“Having that opportunity to see him at that point in time and to see what he’s been able to grow into, it’s been really amazing.

“I’ll DM Mahomes every now and then and we’ll exchange a laugh or talk about random things like that.

“It’s cool, I feel like I’m probably more connected than anybody else to all the biggest names in the sport.”
