A late-night ride ended in tragedy when a 33 year old man lost his life after slamming his speeding Vespa into the back of a parked van in Nonthaburi province.
The horrific crash took place at 2.30am today, July 3, on the Bang Kruai-Sai Noi Road, near the entrance to Lapawan Village 7 in Bang Rak Phatthana subdistrict, Bang Bua Thong district.
Police officers from Bang Bua Thong Police Station, emergency responders from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, and an on-duty doctor from the Institute of Forensic Medicine rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the fatal collision.
At the crash site, rescue personnel found the body of 33 year old Natthaphon (surname withheld), lying next to his blue Vespa Sprint motorcycle. The scooter had no licence plate and was extensively damaged from the impact.
Investigators noted that the Vespa had collided with the rear of a white Toyota van registered in Tak province, which had been parked along the roadside.
The force of the crash was so intense that the speedometer was knocked out of the dashboard, its needle frozen at 80 kilometres per hour, a chilling indication of the speed at which the rider was travelling moments before impact.
Police officers examined the area and retrieved closed-circuit television footage from a nearby house. The video evidence revealed that Natthaphon’s Vespa had been travelling at high speed before careening into the stationary van. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Investigators meticulously documented the scene and gathered all available evidence to support their report. Following standard procedure, Ruamkatanyu Foundation personnel were tasked with transferring the body to the Institute of Forensic Science for an autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death, reported KhaoSod.
According to officers, preliminary findings strongly suggested excessive speed as the primary factor in the crash. Locals reported that the road, which heads towards the Bang Phlu intersection, is notorious for speeding vehicles during the early hours of the morning.
Police urged motorists to exercise caution when driving at night, warning that dimly lit roads and parked vehicles can quickly become deadly hazards. The investigation into the circumstances of the collision remains ongoing.
