Very sad news has come out for football lovers around the world. Liverpool star footballer Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre died in a tragic road accident in Spain. The accident took place on the A52 highway in the Sernadilla area of Zamora province in the early hours of Thursday.
According to the Spanish Civil Guard, the accident happened when Jota and his brother were travelling in a Lamborghini car. According to local media reports, the tire burst while overtaking the car at around 12:30 pm, causing the vehicle to go out of control and fall off the road and catch fire. Both died on the spot due to the fierce fire.
Diogo Jota tied the knot with his partner Ruete Cardoso just a few days ago on June 22. The two were together since 2012 and have three young children.
28-year-old Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, whose transfer price was €44.7 million. He played 182 matches for Liverpool, scoring 65 goals and giving 26 assists. During this time he also won major titles like the Premier League (2024-25), FA Cup (2021-22) and League Cup (2021-22).
His younger brother, 26-year-old Andre Felipe, played for Portuguese club Penafiel.
Portugal’s Prime Minister Luis Montenegro expressed grief on social media, saying, “The news of the death of Diogo Jota and his brother is unexpected and heartbreaking. This is a very sad day for football and the world of sports.”
At the same time, Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proença wrote, “Diogo Jota was not only a great player, but also an inspirational human being. His energy, smile and passion for the game will always be remembered.”
The football world is deeply mourning this incident. UEFA has announced a minute’s silence before the Portugal-Spain match of the Women’s European Championship on Thursday. Portugal has lost two shining stars, and now this community will remember their contribution every day.
