‘Underrated’ NFL star who has earned $9 million still unemployed with Super Bowl contenders ‘most likely’ to sign him

A SEEMINGLY overlooked NFL star remains a free agent, and a Super Bowl contender is seen as the favorite to scoop him up.

A former NFL second-round pick has earned $9 million during his football career.

The Eagles are coming off a Super Bowl-winning campaign thanks to their play on both sides of the ball.

Their defense was stifling in the secondary, but it won’t be as easy in 2025 due to the losses of veterans Darius Slay Jr., C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Isaiah Rodgers.

Philly will be placing more pressure on Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, both of whom enjoyed Pro Bowl-level rookie seasons.

And there will be pressure on Rookie Kelee Ringo, who enters the summer as the favorite to start opposite Mitchell on the outside.

To alleviate the pressure on some of their players, the Eagles could look to add free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported last month that Samuel is “on their radar” and Eagles reporter Anthony Dibona sees the Eagles “most likely” to sign the former Los Angeles Chargers player.

“It’s clear that the Eagles have created a culture and reputation around the NFL that allows players to prove their worth,” DiBona wrote in an article for The Philly Special Show.

“If Samuel wants the chance to potentially start on a Super Bowl contender that will play plenty of nationally televised games, it feels like an ideal move for both sides.”

The Chargers didn’t renew Samuel’s contract in March.

The 25-year-old has looked to land with a team this summer as he continues to recover from offseason neck surgery.

Samuel’s expected to sign a cheap, one-year deal in hopes of getting a bigger contract next offseason.

He played in only four games in the 2024 season due to injury.

But Samuel posted two interceptions in each of his first three campaigns.

He also put together a memorable performance during the Chargers’ playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022, intercepting Trevor Lawrence a stunning three times.

The Eagles are a fit for Samuel as they need more depth at the cornerback position.

The cornerback room also consists of rookie Mac McWilliams, third-year Eli Ricks, and veteran Adpree Jackson.

Philadelphia also has the necessary cap space to get a deal done with Samuel.

They currently have $30.7 million in cap space.
