People celebrate July 4th at community lunch

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Independence Day celebrations are off and running in KELOLAND.

From fireworks to hanging out at the lake, people are making the holiday all sorts of way.

A crowd of people, some wearing red, white, and blue, lined up for a tasty tradition in Sioux Falls.

The city of Sioux Falls held its 4th of July community lunch.

Katie Wissink and her family joined the celebration

“We just like coming down and hanging out and enjoying the day together,” said Katie Wissink of Sioux Falls.

Volk: What do you think of this 4th of July celebration?
Lucas Wissink: Awesome.

People enjoyed free hotdogs, veggie burgers, chips, and water.

The city planned to feed up to 2,000 people.

“It brings everybody out and everybody together, so it’s just a fun time to come and see,” said Mary Johnson of Sioux Falls.

During lunchtime, some people enjoyed the sounds of the Sioux Falls Municipal Band at Jacobson Plaza, one of the new developments in the area.

“When you think just a few years ago this was all just green space that wasn’t being used, so to see the amount of people down here making memories is really awesome,” said Jackie Nelson with Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation.

And there are still more memories to be made this holiday.

“Hopefully, if the weather holds out we’ll go and shoot some fireworks tonight,” Wissink said.

This city says the Independence Day Parade was not held this year because of a low number of parade entries.

More events are planned for Saturday.
