Two fans airlifted to hospital and five more injured as cyclists crash into crowd forcing national event to be cancelled

THE final day of the German Track Cycling Championships was abandoned after a shock crash.

Several spectators were injured at the Dudenhofen event after two cyclists crashed into the crowd.

Two cyclists crashed into the crowd causing serious injuries to spectators[/caption]

During the men’s Keirin semi-finals two riders careered over the barriers on the final bend of the race.

It’s thought that the two cyclists were travelling at around 35mph when they incident occurred.

The crash led to serious injuries, with two members of the crowd being airlifted to hospital and five others hurt.

It’s reported that two helicopters, six ambulances and an emergency doctor were on hand for the aftermath.

Fortunately the two cyclists have escaped with only minor injuries.

Oliver Streich of German Cycling said: “The health of athletes and spectators always comes first.

“Cancelling the event was therefore unavoidable. Best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to all those injured.”

While the chairman of Dudenhofen Cycling Club, Jens Hartwig, said: “I’m shocked by the accident.

“We’ve had a cycling festival here in Dudenhofen for five days. Of course, no-one wanted the event to end like this.

“I wish everyone involved a speedy and full recovery.”
