Shedeur Sanders in major cut fears after Cleveland Browns quarterback is added to negotiation list

SHEDEUR Sanders was placed on a little-known list which led to fears for his NFL career.

Sanders, 23, was selected in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.

The quarterback was tipped to go in the first round but suffered an unprecedented slide.

And that has left him in a battle for a roster spot, let alone a starting job.

Sanders was last week placed on the Canadian Football League’s negotiation list.

The Toronto Argunauts hold his negotiation rights.

Fans unfamiliar with the list were left wondering what that means for Sanders’ future as an NFL player.

The list has been used for a long period in the league but it rarely spoken of.

It gives CFL teams exclusive rights to select active NFL players if they ever decide to head north.

Sanders’ inclusion threw further doubt over his career with the Browns.

But the quarterback is highly unlikely to make the switch to the CFL, this year at least.

Sanders is still in a four-way battle for the Browns starting job.

Joe Flacco, 40, is front runner for the job ahead of Kenny Pickett.

Pickett, 27, was picked up in a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles this off-season.

Sanders was taken in the fifth round of the draft behind third-round pick Dillon Gabriel.

The pair are thought to be in a battle to make the active roster.

Cleveland are likely to keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man squad.

That means one of Sanders or Gabriel likely faces being dropped to the practice squad.

Cleveland.com reported that injured starter Watson has taken Sanders under his wing.

“Watson has been an awesome teammate inside the quarterback room and meeting rooms,” the Cleveland.com report said.

“He’s been a great cheerleader for the four quarterbacks vying for the starting job.

“He’s been especially helpful to the rookies in Gabriel and Sanders, who are working overtime to remain in the starting mix.”
