Grocer with 2k sites gains march over rivals by opening 36 stores in 12 states – see if new locations are coming

A GROCER with over 2,000 locations in the US is set to open another 36 across 12 states, as it marches towards its ambitious 2025 end goal.

The chain has set itself some big targets over the coming years, and is using some recently acquired to boost its expansion plans.

Aldi is taking one step closer to its aim of opening 225 new locations in 2025.

If the chain achieves this, it will set its own history, marking the most stores opened in a single year in the US.

Going forward, Aldi has set its sights on 800 new locations by 2028.

The chain has just announced 36 new stores to open across 12 states, including Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Maryland.

Florida will see the large majority of the new stores.

To facilitate its lofty plans, Aldi is leaning on its recent acquisition of some Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets.

Aldi gained about 400 stores in this deal, and is reopening the stores under the Aldi name.

Overall, roughly 220 Winn-Dixie and Havrys locations will be converted into Aldis.

Aldi CEO Jason Hart said: “With the acquisition of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets, Aldi will serve even more communities in the Southeast, bringing us closer to our customers in a region where we’ve already experienced significant demand for affordable, quality groceries.”

Aldi is also planning to convert about 220 Southeastern Grocers locations to the Aldi format.

The new stores are set to open across a few months, with one in Alexander City, Alabama to open in the middle of this month.

But others, like in Florida, will not be open until 2026.

RECENT STORE OPENINGS

Aldi has already opened roughly 40 new locations so far this year, with 20 opening last month alone.

On June 5, a new Aldi store opened in Ocala, Florida, and on June 12, one opened in Medford on Long Island.

The Long Island spot is located at 2799 Route 112 Medford, NY.

It will offer popular private-label products to eastern Long Island.

Matt Thon, Aldi regional vice president, commented on the store opening in Ocala.

He said: “At our new Ocala ALDI store, shoppers will find that every decision we make, from our product selection to store layout, is to provide our customers with the best products at the lowest possible prices of any national grocer.

“Our customers can save up to 36% on an average household’s shopping list.”

The Medford opening kicked off with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a round of exclusive giveaways and promotions for early bird customers.

The first 100 shoppers were given a Golden Ticket worth up to $100, as well as Aldi goodies and a tote bag.

Aldi has not made it clear if this will be the same for every store opening.
