Thailand deluge: TMD warns of heavy rainfall and flash floods

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather warning for today, predicting heavy rainfall in 41 provinces across Thailand, with some areas experiencing intense downpours covering 70% of the region.

Eight provinces have been specifically cautioned to be on alert for flash floods and rapid water flow due to accumulated rainfall. These provinces include Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Loei, Bueng Kan, Chanthaburi, and Trat, particularly in hilly regions and near waterways.

This weather pattern is attributed to a monsoon trough passing through upper Myanmar, Northern Thailand, upper northeast Thailand, and northern Vietnam, alongside a low-pressure area moving along this trough in southern China.

Additionally, a moderate southwest monsoon is expected to strengthen over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. In the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, moderate winds are anticipated, with waves reaching approximately 2 metres in the upper Andaman Sea and 1-2 metres in the lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand. In areas with thunderstorms, waves can exceed 2 metres, and seafarers are advised to exercise caution and avoid areas with thunderstorms.
