Can't say I personally relate to the character, but that’s the beauty of acting": Anupam Bhattacharya on his role in Ishani 956388

Anupam Bhattacharya has been one of the few actors who has consistently showcased his versatility with every role he has taken on. Having been a part of popular shows like Koshish… Ek Aasha, Kalash, Dekho Magar Pyaar Se, Durgesh Nandinii, Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani, and Ishq Subhan Allah, the actor is now seen in the spin-off of Jhanak on Star Plus, which has been renamed Ishani.

In the show, Anupam essays the role of Shashwat Sengupta—a man burdened by his past and hesitant about emotional vulnerability.

Talking about the role, he shared, “In Jhanak Season 2, now titled Ishani, I play the role of Shashwat Sengupta, opposite Ishani (played by Megha Chakraborty), who was one of the leads in Season 1. Shashwat is a widower with a teenage son and daughter.”

He further explained the dynamic, saying, “He marries Ishani primarily to manage his household and take care of his wayward children. Their relationship is layered and complex—his fragile ego and tendency to view Ishani as capable only of domestic responsibilities add to the drama.”

However, the actor confessed that the character is very different from who he is in real life. “I can’t say I personally relate to the character, but that’s the beauty of acting—portraying someone completely different from who you are,” he said.

Having worked across television, OTT, and films, Anupam acknowledges the nuances of each medium. “While acting is the common thread across television, OTT, and films, each medium caters to a different audience and therefore demands a slightly different approach. The style, pacing, and depth of storytelling can vary significantly,” he explained.

“For instance, TV often requires a more immediate and expressive style; OTT offers more room for subtlety and layered performances, while films usually allow for a more cinematic and detailed character arc. Each format brings its own set of challenges and rewards,” Anupam concluded.
