Costco shoppers demand answers over ‘scanning’ checkout change after exec confirmed stores testing alternative

COSTCO shoppers are demanding answers to when a major checkout change will be coming.

It has been confirmed that chiefs are testing the new method, but shoppers have been waiting months without any result.

Costco is currently testing scan and go in some of its US warehouses, a tool that rival Sam’s Club has fully embraced.

The policy allows you to go round the store and scan the items you want to purchase for yourself.

You then pay once at the end without waiting in long checkout lines, meaning shoppers can save time and exit the store quicker.

But there has been little news on when this feature will be rolled out, and customers are growining impatient.

Recently, one took to the social media platform X to express anger over the delay.

The complaint from July 1 said: “@Costco love the stores. I’m an investor.

“When are Coke products coming to the food court?

“When will the strawberry lemonade come back?

“When will scan and go be implemented?”

Costco has not replied to this post, and The US Sun has contacted them for comment, but did not hear back right away.

PREVIOUS COMPLAINTS

Costco has not replied to the post, but even back in January shoppers have been asking the retailer the same thing.

One customer said on X way back on January 6: “Costco needs to follow Sam’s Club and have it where you scan products as you put them in your cart, and it automatically checks you out when you leave.

“The lines are way too long.”

And another shopper chimed in: “I wish Costco had scan and go.

Costco’s membership scanners

Costco has unveiled membership scanners at its store entrances.

In August 2024, the retailer released a statement about the scanners on its website.

“Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse,” it wrote.

“Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner.

“Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member for entry.

“If you have any questions or concerns, there will always be an attendant at the door to assist you!

“If your membership is inactive, expired, or you would like to sign up for a new membership, the attendant will ask that you stop by the membership counter prior to entering the warehouse to shop.

“Additionally, if your membership card does not have a photo, please be prepared to show your valid photo ID.

“We encourage you to stop by the membership counter to have a photo taken to have on your card.”

“The Sam’s here is always packed. Lines are insane because they give away so many memberships for so cheap.

“Scan and go is the best way to get out of there.”

But some Sam’s Club shoppers have pushed back against the roll out of scan and go.

One complaint said: “The “NEW” system for check out at Sam’s Club is ridiculous.

“Completely out of touch with customer service. Won’t be renewing with them.”

The replies to the post were equally furious: “You can’t check out at any registers… all are closing.

“You have to use the app and scan your stuff and pay online.

“They have people that check online to see if you “missed” anything! No customer service anymore!”
