According to the lawsuit, the firm allegedly charged advertisers for clicks on ads that were not clicked on by users in the specified geographic areas.
This is believed to have violated Google’s guidelines and allegedly resulted in advertisers overpaying for ads.
The settlement benefits individuals and entities in the US who advertised through Google’s AdWords program and paid for clicks on their ads between Jan. 1, 2004, and Dec. 13, 2012.
There are two sections of the settlement, which has been divided into a Location Targeting Class and a Search Bundled Clicks Class.
The Location Targeting Class group consists of those in the US who advertised through Google’s AdWords Program between Jan. 1, 2004, and March 22, 2011.
And this group was allegedly charged for clicks from outside the chosen area of ads in this time period.
The Search Bundled Clicks Class comprises of those who ran ads between June 1, 2009, and Dec. 13, 2012 – and may have been charged more than they should have.
It applies to advertisers who had their ads appear in Google search results and on other websites, but didn’t have a separate price set for those extra sites.
Google’s online search engine allows users to search the web for information, products and services.
Businesses can pay Google to have their ads show up in search results when users search for specific terms.
Google did not admit to any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $100million to resolve the allegations.
Under the terms of the Google AdWords settlement, class members can receive a cash payment based on the amount they paid for clicks on ads that were not clicked on by users in the specified geographic areas.
Exact payment amounts will therefore vary between each class member.
Those who wish to exclude have until July 20, 2025 to do so.
And the final deadline to submit a valid claim in also July 20.
Class members need proof of purchase to submit their claim – which will be their Google AdWords Customer ID.
It comes as eligible Americans have only a few weeks left to claim up to $2,500 from a $3.5million data breach settlement.
Neiman Marcus agreed to pay the gargantuan sum to resolve a class action lawsuit claiming it failed to prevent a data breach that compromised customer information in 2024.
The settlement benefits those whose personal information was potentially compromised in the May 2024 breach.
As a result of the breach, consumers allegedly endured identity theft, fraud, among other damages.
Eligible claimants can also receive payments without any proof of purchase for their slice of a huge $4.5million settlement.
The lawsuit alleged that Criterion Collection, a film distribution company, violated several privacy laws.
Class members can receive payments without any proof of purchase but will need to submit a form before August 19.
