Beloved grocer with 500 stores to close yet another location – following string of shutdowns

A POPULAR grocery store with hundreds of locations across the US is closing another one of its outlets.

Piggly Wiggly has around 500 stores in 18 states, but some of the brand’s stores are becoming relics of the past.

One such location is the outlet in Wautoma, Wisconsin – around 90 miles from Green Bay.

The store is set to close after Labor Day, September 1, as reported by the ABC affiliate WBAY-TV.

It will vanish from the map after more than 20 years of business

News of the imminent closure has left fans devastated.

Lydia Tratz, a local, described the shutdown as “sad.”

In a Facebook post, she revealed how she trusted Piggly Wiggly over larger brands for bakery items.

Scores of shoppers have been left stunned by the news.

“That’s lame,” Bill Thornton, a fellow Piggly Wiggly shopper, said.

“Sad to see this happen,” Aaron Wegner added.

Shoppers have begged bosses to open a dedicated meat market following the store closure.

Bosses are opening a new state-of-the-art center and construction is to start in September.

Another Piggly Wiggly store’s days are numbered.

Bosses are in the process of closing down a store in Gordon, Georgia – located around 100 miles from Atlanta.

The store is set to close on August 16, as reported by the ABC affiliate WXGA-TV.

US braces for ‘45,000 store closures’

Some 45,000 bricks-and-mortar stores could close in the next five years, experts have warned.

Several major retailers have announced store closures or gone out of business altogether in recent years.

In 2023, chains such as Foot Locker announced plans to close up to 400 outlets by 2026.

While, other well-known retailers like Tuesday Morning and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams filed for bankruptcy in 2023.

Bed Bath & Beyond has closed all of its brick-and-mortar stores and is now an online-only retailer.

The most affected retailers have been clothing, consumer electronics, sporting goods, hobby, book, music, and home furnishing stores since the start of 2019.

UBS has predicted the total number of retail stores will drop by 45k from 958k to 913k.

Despite that, the report says that certain stores should thrive while others decline.

It said retailers such as Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, and Target, could be among the winners.

Execs admitted the outlet was underperforming, but the shutdown has sparked fears of a food desert.

Customers risk having to travel around 20 miles to stores in locations such as Gray or Macon.

The U.S. Sun previously reported how a Piggly Wiggly location in Columbia, South Carolina, had closed after 50 years of business.

The store was affectionately known as the “Social Pig.”

Last year, a Piggly Wiggly store in Brookfield, Wisconsin, also slammed shut in a move that was likened to a “death in the family.”

It’s not just bosses of grocery stores that are closing down locations.

Popular TexMex chain Z’Tejas closed its final location in Kyle, Texas, on June 30.

And, bosses at Applebee’s continue to close outlets. A restaurant in Pinellas Park, Florida, closed on June 3.
