SDSU player’s death ruled as natural causes

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota State University football player Nate White, 20, died suddenly on June 25 from a medical event that disrupted his breathing and heart functions, Brookings Police said in a news release Tuesday.

Brookings Police were investigating White’s death to determine a cause of death. The release said police found no criminal activity involved in the death. It was ruled a natural, sudden death.

White was found unresponsive at his home in Brookings at about 6:44 a.m.

Brookings police chief Michael Drake told KELOLAND News on June 26 that as part of the investigation, police needed determine not only the cause but also if there were contributing factors, if someone was culpable in the death and similar, Drake said.

An autopsy with a toxicology report was part of the investigation.

White was from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was listed as a sophomore on the 2025 SDSU roster.
