Patrick Mahomes reacts after Kansas City Chiefs makes $94 million decision over key Andy Reid star

PATRICK MAHOMES has revealed his reaction after the Kansas City Chiefs made a $94million decision.

Hours before Tuesday’s franchise-tag deadline, the Super Bowl finalists agreed a colossal deal with guard Trey Smith.

The new deal will keep Smith, 26, in Kansas for four years.

Smith’s new deal is worth $70m guaranteed.

And it will make him the best-paid guard in NFL history.

Smith was first drafted by the Chiefs in 2021 as a sixth-round pick.

But as a player who was given the franchise tag in February, he had until 4pm EST on Tuesday to reach a long-term deal with them.

If he had failed to do so, he would have been held on a one-year franchise tender for the 2025 season, which would have been worth $23.4m.

And the decision for the star, who earned his first Pro Bowl nod last season under coach Andy Reid, seems to have left quarterback Mahomes very happy.

Reacting on social media, Mahomes, 29, simply posted a smiling face emoji.

And it is not a surprise given how he has missed only missed one game through the last four seasons, chalking up an impressive record across 80 starts.

He has become a vital member of the Chiefs’ offensive line-up and will remain there for some time to come.

Two out of three play-off campaigns he has been involved with have ended in play-off victories as well, with last season’s defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles being the exception.

But speaking to the Up and Adams podcast, he believes the learning curve will be vital for them getting back to the top.

He said: “I think you need losses in life to learn from it.

“You need adversity to create endurance. It helps build character from that as well.

“If you go and win, win, win, you don’t have any negativity that comes your way, and you get used to it. You become complacent.

“I think that’s the beautiful thing about a loss.

“It taught us how much it hurts to lose compared to how great it feels to win.”

Smith’s new deal comes 11 months after the Chiefs made Creed Humphrey the highest-paid center ever.

That deal will see Humphrey earn $50m guaranteed over four years.
