Gutwrenching John Elway update as NFL legend tries to come to terms with death of agent pal following golf cart accident

NFL Hall of Famer John Elway is struggling to cope with the loss of his friend and agent Jeff Sperbeck.

The Denver Broncos legend was driving the gold cart that Sperbeck fell from, causing a fatal head injury.

This week, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office ruled that Sperbeck’s death was an accident.

Elway will not face any criminal charges from the tragic incident, but that isn’t helping his mood.

According to a source close to the 65-year-old Elway, he is still in a dark place three months after Sperbeck’s death.

“John is not coping well with the loss and the accident. He has been really upset and withdrawn,” a source told Page Six.

“He is very down. He is not his upbeat, usual self.”

In released 911 call audio, Elway answered questions while aid was being given to Sperbeck.

“He fell off the golf cart,” Elway said.

“He was on the back and he fell off the golf cart.”

The call was mostly redacted, but ends after Elway handed off the phone to another person when a medic arrived on the scene.

Following the ruling of Elway’s innocence, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told 9News in Denver about how Sperbeck’s death was ruled an accident.

“I’ve looked at video 100 times and there’s no explanation as to why he fell off, he just fell off,” Bianco said.

“We’ve talked to everyone involved and we found nothing new.

“There was nothing criminal, it was what we’ve been saying all along that this was a tragic accident.”

A lawyer for Elway released a statement after Elway’s innocence was proven.

“This has been a terrible situation for everybody,” the lawyer told Page Six.

“We always knew that John had done nothing wrong, however, that does not lessen the sadness.”

At the time of Sperbeck’s death, Elway released his own statement.

“I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,” he said.

“There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.

“My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him.

“Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.”
