Helpline Center: June was 988’s busiest month to date

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Summertime can allow kids more freedom as they enjoy time off from school, but this year, it has also brought an increase in young people reaching out to 988 at the Helpline Center.

It has been an active summer at the Helpline Center.

“June was our busiest month that we’ve ever had at 988, the most contacts that we’ve ever had for people reaching out,” 988 director Scott Wilson said.

Wilson says a large part of that has been young people.

“A significant portion of those are text chats. 50% of the text chats that reach out to us are below the age of 20. 75% are below the age of 30,” Wilson said.

“Summertime can bring a lot of stressors for younger kids. They don’t have the regular structure in their days. They don’t have the support system of the school faculty, counselors and caring teachers. It can just be hard for those kiddos who may not have the support system at home,” community development director Lisa Ottmar said.

Part of that structure at school also includes a daily breakfast and lunch. Additionally, the Helpline Center says summertime may bring more screen time and irregular sleeping patterns.

Staff at the Helpline Center say that if you find yourself struggling with your mental health, you should reach out to someone who you trust.

“Whether that’s us here at 988, if that’s talking to their parents or if that’s just reaching out to one of their friends, reach out to someone. Just let them know how you’re feeling. If you’re struggling, there’s someone out there that cares about you and wants to know how you’re doing,” Wilson said.

All to help people understand that they are not alone

According to the Helpline Center website, the top three reasons for people contacting them in June were anxiety, relationship or family issues and thoughts of suicide.
