CBS revealed the news just hours before Stephen hosted Thursday night’s episode, with the TV titan only learning of the news shortly before the announcement was made public.

At the top of last night’s episode, Stephen, 61, formally acknowledged that CBS will bring the show to an end in May, with him speaking out with his thoughts and feelings.

When the audience booed the news of the show’s axe, Stephen smiled and said, “Yeah, I share your feelings.

“It’s not just the end of our show, but it’s the end of ‘The Late Show’ on CBS.

“I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.”

He added, “I do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners.

“I’m so grateful to the Tiffany network for giving me this chair and this beautiful theater to call home.

“And of course I’m grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night in here, out there, all around the world, Mr. and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea.

“I’m grateful to share the stage with this band, these artists over here every night.

“And I am extraordinarily, deeply grateful to the 200 people who work here.”

He continued to gush about the job he loves, saying, “We get to do this show — we get to do this show for each other every day, all day.

“And I’ve had the pleasure and the responsibility of sharing what we do every day with you in front of this camera for the last 10 years.

“And let me tell you, it is a fantastic job. I wish somebody else was getting it.

“And it’s a job that I’m looking forward to doing with this usual gang of idiots for another 10 months. It’s going to be fun. Y’all ready?”

Current Late-Night Shows

Late-night shows have become a stape on American television, filled with humorous takes on news, interviews with guests, and music performances.

  • Jimmy Kimmel Live, ABC
  • Late Night with Seth Meyers, NBC
  • The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, NBC
  • The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, CBS
  • After Midnight, CBS
  • Watch What Happens Live, Bravo
  • The Daily Show, Comedy Central
  • Real Time with Bill Maher, HBO

In a statement first obtained by Variety, CBS said, “We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire The Late Show franchise in May of 2026.

“We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.”

They added, “This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.

“It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

Fans are already fuming that the network is making a “huge mistake” by letting Stephen go.

“Wow I pity CBS if they think canceling Colbert is a good idea. No longer a great network. This is a huge mistake,” one person raged online after the news was public.

“CBS one of the stupidest things I’ve seen a network do! Stephen Colbert is the BEST of late night TV! HUGE MISTAKE,” another agreed.
