Training camp begins next week for teams.

But one team received the stunning news that one player has called it quits.

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Chargers’ star wide receiver Mike Williams announced his retirement from the NFL.

Williams’ decision came as a shock to the Chargers, a source told ESPN.

The 30-year-old’s decision came just days after the Chargers revealed a troubling injury update on his health.

Earlier this week, Williams was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list with an undisclosed injury.

General manager Joe Hortiz said Wednesday that he expected Williams back at camp.

Williams returned to the Chargers back in March on a one-year, $3 million deal.

He spent his first seven seasons with the Chargers before he was released before the 2024 campaign.

Williams spent last season with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.

With both teams, he recorded just 21 receptions for 298 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Williams wasn’t able to show his past form since suffering a torn ACL in 2023.

During his seven-year tenure with the Chargers, he posted 4,806 receiving yards, which is the all-time 10th best for the franchise.

Williams is also 13th in receptions (309) and touchdowns (31).

Without Williams, the Chargers will look to wide receivers Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, Tre Harris, and KeAndre Lambert-Smith.

Star quarterback Justin Herbert played with Williams for four seasons as the two connected 200 times for 2,924 yards and 18 touchdowns in 46 games.

“You can’t really replace a guy like that,” Herbert said about Williams.

“But thankfully we’ve got a receiver room that continues to push each other.”
