Beloved drug store closes final locations leaving fans devastated as it says its ‘time to move on to next chapter’

A BELOVED drug store is closing its final two locations – and has told devastated fans it is “time to move on to the next chapter”.

The popular store announced the closure of its last locations – after the family-owned business served loyal customers for nearly 80 years.

Scolari’s Food and Drug company announced the tragic news to its heartbroken fans.

They are closing down their final two sites in Sun Valley and Sparks, Nevada.

They said in a release that they could not extend the lease or purchase the site at Sun Valley.

This was despite efforts to keep the store under their wing – but they failed to reach an agreement with the landlord.

And they explained that keeping the Sparks location open would have posed significant challenges.

They therefore have taken the difficult decision to close both sites.

Fans have been left grieving following the unfortunate announcement.

The Scolari family said they needed more substantial capital in order to modernize operations.

They also cited the need to change customer shopping habits as a reason for the abrupt closure.

Joey and Jerry Scolari from the family-run business said: “This is not a decision we’ve taken lightly.

“Our roots in the grocery industry go back nearly 80 years, and we are incredibly grateful to our loyal customers, dedicated employees, and supportive communities.

“But the time has come for our family to move on to the next chapter.”

Details about the final closing dates will be released later.

The firm also said it would announce transitional support for employees in the coming weeks.

It comes after a pharmacy that outlasted Walgreens, CVS, & Rite Aid closed after 117 years.

It came amid widespread shutdowns and even bankruptcies from competitors in recent years.

At the end of the day on July 15, 2025, the Central Drug Store in the Excelsior District of San Francisco, California, closed its doors permanently.

A major drug store chain was also set to shut 270 locations this year as it shifted strategy to focus on high-demand areas.

The pharmacy giant blamed changing consumer needs, buying habits, and population shifts for the closures.
