A COLLEGE football star was found dead in a car after being shot to death in Memphis this weekend.

Corey Adams, an 18-year-old freshman at Ole Miss, was the only person killed in a Saturday shooting that injured four others, according to police.

Adams, of New Orleans, was found outside of a home in Cordova and given life-saving measures by authorities to no avail.

“When deputies arrived at the intersection of Forest Hill-Irene and Walnut Grove, they stopped a vehicle, finding an adult male gunshot victim,” the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office wrote on X.

“Upon arrival at Fern Glade Cove, deputies found multiple shell casings and learned that four adult males arrived by personal vehicles to area hospitals with gunshot wounds.”

The other four suffered non-critical injuries.

Police also confirmed the incident was an active homicide investigation and are looking for suspects.

One of the top defensive linemen recruits in the nation, Adams had posted himself at practice on Instagram in April preparing for the season ahead.

Ole Miss is expected to play their opening game on Aug. 30, just weeks away.

The university mourned the incoming freshman on social media, writing that they were “heartbroken.”

“We are devastated to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on the team, passed away last night in Cordova, Tennessee,” the football team’s statement said.

“While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

The team then said they would “not be commenting further at this time” out of respect for the family.

Users flooded the post, commenting their condolences for the young player.

“A mom & dad woke up to this tragic news today and now have to navigate this life without their son. As a dad, I can’t even imagine,” wrote one user.

“Prayers up for the Adams family. Praying for comfort at this time. Tell somebody you love them today.”

Ole Miss statement on the player’s death

An X post by Ole Miss read:

“We are devastated to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on the team, passed away last night in Cordova, Tennessee. While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

Out of respect for his family, we will not be commenting further at this time. We ask the Ole Miss community to keep Corey in their thoughts and respect the privacy of everyone involved.”

Both Ole Miss and the sheriff’s office did not immediately respond for comment.

A neighbor told WATN-TV that the house was having a party at the time of the shooting.

“Things got out of hand,” the man said. “My first thought was somebody had thrown out a long row of firecrackers.”

“I’m sorry for him,” the neighbor continued. “I mean, he had huge promise, great accolades.”

“That cannot be your first response is to pull a gun and shoot somebody.”

Everyone was gone by the time police arrived, a witness told WREG.

“I was watching TV in my living room right here and I heard big shots. Huge shots,” he said.

“I thought there was a big attack happening. I told my children just to lie on the ground and turn off all the lights. Definitely, there was a big fear.”

His high school football team, the Edna Karr Cougars, wrote that Adams was a “friend, brother, son, student, and all around great young man.”

“We never question God but this is one we just don’t understand,” they posted to Facebook, according to reports.

Earlier this month, 18-year-old Mycheal Edwards-Wallace, another college football star set to start this season at Newberry College, was killed after a mass shooting in South Carolina.

Those with information on the shooting can call Crimestoppers at 428-CASH.
