Competing for a cause: Research Park hosts annual Heel & Crank Duathlon

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — 140 athletes took part in a run/bike/run duathlon around Research Park to raise funds for people with ALS and muscular dystrophy.

“Team Rocket Tri Club is a local nonprofit that puts on a bunch of triathlons and duathlons in the area,” said Ashlyn Byrge, one of the organizers of the Heel and Crank Duathlon. “We start with a start as a kickoff race and all proceeds get donated to the Alabama chapter of ALS.”

Byrge said the race has continued to grow since its founding 19 years ago. Despite the grueling 5K run, 11-mile bike ride, and 2.2-mile run finisher, she said many athletes return because they find community.

“I think people really come out for the community,” she said. “The triathlon community is one of the most welcoming folks around here, and it’s such great energy at these races. It really gets you hyped and excited for the next one.”

Team Rocket Tri Club is hosting several other races this summer.
