SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken will share his budget in a meeting set for 3 p.m. Thursday at Carnegie Town Hall.
This will be TenHaken’s final budget presentation as his term will end in June 2026.
KELOLAND News will be livestreaming the presentation. You can watch in the player above.
TenHaken praised the city staff for being willing to have the tough discussions this year leading to some difficult decisions.
Before he presented the 2026 budget and the several year capital budget plan, TenHaken said the theme of both was “taking care of today for a better tomorrow.”
It will be important to balance foundational investments with those that transform the community such as a convention center and a project at Frank Olson Pool, he said.
TenHaken also pointed out that almost one third of state’s revenue taxes are supported by Sioux Falls and this corner of the state. And that some officials may not appreciate the growth in the city.
TenHaken cited state decisions that impact city revenues as well as uncertainty with federal decisions.
TenHaken said earlier this month that the city budget would likely need to be cut by around eight to $10 million in the next three years, in response to a property tax cap law passed in 2025 by the state legislature. The law caps the overall value increases of residential property, which he and other officials have said will result in less revenue for cities, counties and schools.
