Kroger shopper reveals loophole to avoid controversial tag issue after chain admits to scanning blunder at checkout

KROGER has come under fire over a price tag mishap.

The major retailer allegedly had failed to update price tags across its sales floor on certain occasions.

The US Federal Trade Commission and a group of states are poised to sue as soon as next week to block the tie-up between supermarket giants Kroger Co. and Albertsons Cos., according to people familiar with the plans. This caused some shoppers to pay more for certain items, which they had believed to be on sale, at checkout.

The issue was first brought to light following an investigation by Consumer Reports, The Guardian, and the Food & Environment Reporting Network.

But one razor sharp Facebook user mapped out Kroger’s game plan.

DEAL DAY

He said: “I have learned at Kroger that sales end on Tuesday for the week and new sales start on Wednesday.

“Because of this I avoid shopping on Wednesday to avoid any sales confusion.”

This is true for the most part.

Kroger’s new weekly sales ad is available at midnight ET on Wednesdays in most stores, according to Kroger’s website

But for stores located in Indiana (except SE Indiana and Evansville), Illinois and Eastern Missouri, the new weekly ad is available at midnight ET on Thursday.

But the Facebook user has some more tips.

He said: “Also all digital coupons and some of the sale prices come off at the end [of checkout].

“I have had to ask a sales associate before about it and they told me wait until the end before paying, if it didn’t come off then, then they would be able to help.”

RECURRING ISSUE

Multiple Facebook users have said they have been hit with surprise price tag increases at checkout.

One person said: “I was charged a different price at self check out. I switched to HEB and loved it.”

Another chimed in: “This is absolutely true. It happens every time I go there.

“I am very aware of the sales and I have to check and make sure I get the sale when I scan my own items.

“Several times I had to have the attendant change the price to the sale price.

“I also took a picture of the tag.

“Their excuse is they either didn’t get a chance to change the sales tag, it wasn’t on sale any longer or it wasn’t changed in the system.

How to save at Kroger

There are many ways to save at Kroger. Here are some tips.

  • Keep your eyes peeled for Kroger’s Weekly AD. New ones are available on Wednesdays at midnight for most stores.

KROGER RESPONDS

Despite the backlash, Kroger remains firm regarding the price tag mishap.

In a statement to CBS News Texas, the chain said: “The Consumer Reports allegations boil down to misinformation

“We regularly check thousands of items to ensure the prices are correct.

“If an isolated discrepancy occurs, we honor the promotional price to make it right.

“Kroger works diligently to ensure prices are consistent across all platforms – in our stores and online.”

Kroger said it has slashed prices on more than 1,000 items.

But price tag discrepancies aren’t the only self-checkout issues that have people fuming.

Changes to Walmart rules have some shoppers feeling like they are being forced to pay to use self-checkout.

And Target’s new express checkout lanes have some people shaking their heads.
