Nascar in major schedule change with abandoned raceway set to be revived to replace Mexico City on 2026 calendar

NASCAR is reportedly set to ditch the Mexico City raceway for the 2026 season.

The city was the first internationally to host a points-paying Cup Series race since 1958 in June.

Trackhorse Racing driver Shane van Gibergen, 36, won the race by a massive 16-second margin.

But it will not return to the schedule for 2026 as Mexico City will be hosting five Men’s World Cup soccer matches over June and July.

The Athletic have claimed that Nascar will instead be heading to the abandoned track at Chicagoland Speedway.

It is located 50 miles outside of Chicago in Joliet, Illinois and is 1.5miles long.

It was first opened in 2001 and hosted the Cup Series and Xfinity Series that year.

The iconic raceway has been mostly vacant since 2019, when Nascar opted to move elsewhere.

The report has claimed that fans would be in favor of the return to the Chicagoland Speedway.

But former driver Kyle Petty is firmly against the move and would prefer a return to downtown Chicago.

He told Fast Talk: “Listen, I wish they would go back (to downtown Chicago) because I think it had established itself.

“You were getting people.

“I hope they don’t go to Chicagoland or out there, and I’m going to say that and let me tell you why.

“I think we took the sport or they took the sport to the streets of Chicago, but I don’t think the streets of Chicago are going to come to Chicagoland.

“From a fan perspective, the juxtaposition of those two races against each other and the fan base, I think it’s a totally different fan base almost.”

Petty, 65, has insisted that he would rather see Nascar continue with street races and go somewhere else.

Here are the top ten drivers in the current Cup Series statndings…

  1. Chase Elliott, 726pts
  2. Williams Byron, 722pts
  3. Kyle Larson, 711pts
  4. Denny Hamlin, 706pts
  5. Christopher Bell, 664pts

  10. Chris Buescher, 559pts

He added: “I applaud Nascar for going to the streets of Chicago.

“would like to see them go somewhere else, whether it’s San Diego or wherever.

“The point is you can take that form of racing (street races) to a lot of places.

“So let’s take it someplace. Let’s make that a traveling date and go to different places and see if we can generate 15,000, 20,000 new fans in that area.

“Let’s build it a little bit at a time. More like grassroots.”

Meanwhile, there is a chance that racing could return to Mexico City in 2027.

The city would be more available to Nascar as the World Cup would not be taking place.
