SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The town of Murdo is preparing for the funeral of a late firefighter.
Nick Van Dam, 37, was a firefighter responding to a grass fire Saturday evening when the firetruck left the roadway, rolled and ejected him, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. He died at the scene.
According to the South Dakota Local Assistance State Team (LAST), Van Dam had been a volunteer firefighter in Murdo for eight years and a captain for six. He had a wife and four children. He was also the parts and service manager at Murdo Car Sales.
