Aldi shoppers urge chain to bring back Walmart style shopping cart after retailer’s ‘sudden removal’

ALDI shoppers have urged the chain to bring back a style of shopping cart often found in its rival Walmart.

Customers have called on the budget retailer to bring back a smaller alternative to carts, but Aldi has warned of the risk of theft as a result.

When Aldi shoppers only need a few things in the store, they have cried out for shopping baskets to be available in the same way carts are.

Aldi has used baskets in the past, but has had to take them away from some stores because of the number of people stealing them.

The stores reported it cost them around $1,000 monthly in stolen baskets, according to the outlet Red Sheep.

Aldi has tried to get around this in the past, but customers were not happy with the workaround.

Before shopping baskets became common in Aldi stores, you could buy them in the Special Buys for $10.

Customers did not like the idea and criticized Aldi for selling baskets

Aldi has encouraged the use of reusable bags as an alternative, but shoppers on social media have remained adamant.

The US Sun has contacted Aldi about the use of shopping baskets in stores, but did not hear back right away.

STEADFAST SHOPPERS

To this day, shoppers at Aldi are determined to see shopping baskets make a full return to stores.

On Reddit recently, a thread was dedicated to the very subject.

The description said: “Am I the only one that really wishes Aldi would offer shopping baskets like other stores do?

“So many times I want to stop just for a few items and I find myself driving by because I don’t want to mess with a big cart for 3-4 things.”

The lack of widely available baskets has left shoppers scrambling for an alternative.

Those in the comments revealed what they use as a makeshift basket.

How many Aldi stores are there in the US?

AS of May 12, 2025, there are 2,510 Aldi stores operating across 41 states and territories in the United States.

Florida leads with 244 locations, followed by Illinois (215), Ohio (170).

In 2025, the company plans to open 225 new stores.

One person said: “I keep one of those big blue ikea bags. Works for small and large runs.”

This method was quite common on the thread, with another person adding: “I bring in a reusable grocery bag, fill it up while walking around the store and then unload it at the cash register, pay for my stuff, load up the bag again and go.”

Another shopper wrote: “If I have forgotten a bag I’ll usually scope out an empty cardboard box on one of the shelves.”

This method was backed up by a Reddit user on the thread: “I do this every time.

“It’s one of my first moves and I use it as a shopping basket.”

But some said going out of your way not to use a cart wasn’t worth it.

A sceptic noted: I feel like a cart isn’t enough of an inconvenience to avoid going to the store because if it lol.”

While someone else said that bringing a bag from home could lead people to think you’re stealing.

One person chimed in: “My anxiety would make me think everyone else thinks I’m stealing.

“I know no one would look twice, but anxiety isn’t always rational.”
