Actor survives in America’s most expensive city on just $20 for a day – he ate three meals out plus drinks and snacks

AN actor and content creator has proven that it’s possible to survive on a daily food budget of just $20 in America’s most expensive city.

The influencer showed how he stretched his dollars in a viral video, eating out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in New York City without burning a hole in his wallet.

New York City, specifically Manhattan, is the priciest city in the country thanks to its extremely high cost of housing, transportation, and dining.

Eating out doesn’t have to break the bank, however, with some strategic choices and a little forward planning.

Actor and Indian food influencer Aabir Vyas (@belikeeaabirr), who moved from Mumbai to New York City, managed to eat three meals in the expensive city on just $20.

He documented his day in an Instagram reel last week, in an episode of “Barely Surviving with Aabir.”

“The challenge is simple: manage breakfast, lunch, and dinner outside, all within $20,” said Vyas, translating his original Hindi intro to the video.

The influencer aimed to not only survive on his limited budget, but also to make relatively healthy choices regarding his purchases that would help keep him full.

GRUB TIME

He started out strong with a breakfast that cost him just $4, spending $1 for five bananas from a fruit vendor and $3 for a whole wheat egg bagel from a food cart.

“That was my first meal of the day. I’m trying to keep it relatively healthy. I know the protein is low, but the carbs give enough energy to get going,” he said.

Then at lunchtime, Vyas bought a $2.29 cookies and cream flavored protein bar from Trader Joe’s containing 20 grams of protein.

He also picked up a coffee for $6.17, justifying the pricey caffeine by saying, “I needed a good coffee and a place where I could sit and work comfortably.”

As Vyas continued his day in the city, he drank a $0.48 sparkling water from Trader Joe’s to stay hydrated and curb his appetite.

He also ate his leftover bananas before heading to a meeting.

When dinner rolled around, the content creator hit up a classic New York street cart, indulging in a protein-packed chicken and rice meal for $7.

By the end of the day, Vyas had spent $19.94 – six cents less than his $20 max.

REEL RIOT

The New Yorker’s Instagram reel quickly gained attention online, with many viewers praising Vyas.

“Surviving on $20 is crazy,” said one user, as another commended his creativity, writing, “I could never.”

A third asked Vyas to share the spots he ate at, saying that he would end up spending $20 on just one meal.

Others critiqued Vyas’ spending choices, particularly his decision to spend over $6 on coffee with such a minimal budget.

“You spent a third of your budget on coffee?” one user questioned, as another wrote, “Bro drinking a $7 coffee on a $20 budget!”

Other Instagram users defended him, saying that no matter how tight their budget was, they refused to compromise on their coffee.

New York City isn’t the only pricey metropolitan area in the US, with cities including Boston, Honolulu, and Seattle also topping the list.

As the cost of living in the US climbs, more and more Americans are opting to move abroad.

For example, a mom moved her family of four from the US to France and now pays just $2,235 for everything – but the grocery stores blew her away.

Another man from California escaped the US for a cheaper and safer city across the world – he saves $2,300 a month on rent and food costs have plummeted.
