Aldi employee reveals ‘nightmare’ checkout change – and shoppers fear ‘seamlessness’ is gone forever

AN ALDI employee has revealed the checkout change that has made their shopping trips slower.

People have called the change a “nightmare” online, while others think they know why it happened in the first place.

On the social media platform Reddit, an Aldi employee revealed that their local store has scrapped self-checkouts.

The user spoke about how useful they found the policy, especially if they only need things in the store.

But now, the convenience has been scrapped, and the shopper has been left “really bummed” as a result.

They wrote online: “I know not every Aldi even has self checkouts, the one by my house had it until yesterday and they were not going to be brought back according to the employee.

“I love the convenience of self check out especially when I’m making a quick stop and just need a few things I’ll skip the line and they actually had an easy to use POS system that made my trips easy and I never need help or employee assistance it’s just seamless.

“Now they’re gone and I’m really bummed about it.

“Aside from affordability of Aldi I love how easy it is most days to get in and out in a flash.”

In the comments, many mourned the loss of self-checkout machines in their local Aldi stores, too.

One person went as far as to call the change a “nightmare”.

They wrote: “They’re rumored to be going away in my area as a result of loss due to theft.

“This would be a dramatic shift for our stores though in terms of staffing, daily logistics, etc. Seems like a nightmare of a change.”

THEFT TEST

A few comments picked up on the idea of self-checkouts being scrapped to save on retail theft.

Another person commented: “My local Walmart over the last 20 years has gone through various cycles of installing and removing self checkout.

“They get removed due to a high volume of theft.

How many Aldi stores are there in the US?

AS of May 12, 2025, there are 2,510 Aldi stores operating across 41 states and territories in the United States.

Florida leads with 244 locations, followed by Illinois (215), Ohio (170).

In 2025, the company plans to open 225 new stores.

“Then they get reinstalled once theft dies down because the company doesn’t like paying for employees. Rinse and repeat.”

While a third assured: “My Aldi just lost them yesterday as well, my understanding is it’s due to theft.

“Not all are losing them however just the problematic stores.”

The original user made an edit to their initial caption, admitting that it is probably due to theft.

They added: “Edit: thanks for all the replies.

“Does seem largely due to theft I couldn’t imagine but honestly it’s best whatever needs to be done to ensure they’re still making their money while giving us such great prices.”

The US Sun has reached out to Aldi for comment, but did not hear back right away.
