Ohio has approved a $60 billion budget for the state, which allocates a massive $1.7 billion from unclaimed funds from the previous budget.
Unclaimed funds refer to money that has been given back to the government after a certain period has passed to claim.
The new budget is being used for major developments in Ohio, taking from the previously mentioned $1.7 billion portion.
For example, $600 million has been earmarked for a new stadium for the Cleveland Browns.
The new stadium will be located in the suburb of Brook Park.
Other development teams in the state can apply for a slice of another $400 million.
The cash is set aside for other sports venues, and teams across the state have expressed interest in money for upgrades.
And the remaining $700 million has not yet been designated for specific projects.
It is not made clear if teams will also be able to apply for some of this cash for their own developments.
But as a part of the new $60 billion budget total, citizens are being urged to claim from the nearly $5 billion in unclaimed funds.
HOW TO CLAIM
There is a specific process you must follow, and a time limit for how long you have.
To claim, you need to visit unclaimedfunds.ohio.gov, enter your name, and search for any unclaimed money.
If your name appears on the list, you can click the “claim” button and state your relationship to the property.
You will also need to provide other basic information, such as current contact details and proof of residence.
Proof of residence can be provided in a number of ways, like with a letter sent to your address.
A utility bill is a good example of this, but your driver’s licence is also accepted.
Once documents are uploaded, claims can take up to 120 days to process.
This means that the last day you should be waiting for your funds is Tuesday, November 4.
Notably, there is a 10-year grace period for individuals to claim their unclaimed funds.
If they do not do this in time, the funds will be transferred to the state.
