Americans have been urged to start negotiating with their internet providers to wrangle a better price[/caption]

Over half of adults in the US are paying more for their internet than they did the previous year with the average monthly bill costing almost $100,

But according to experts, there are two very easy steps customers can take to negotiate a cheaper price.

Before anything, being kind to the person at the other end of the phone is crucial if you want to wrangle a deal.

A customer service rep is much more likely to offer a discount to someone who is friendly on the phone.

According to Trey Paul, a broadband expert, “kindness is key” as without it there’s very slim chance you’ll talk down the price.

He said: “Always be friendly and courteous.” Why? Because the person on the other end of the phone (or online chat, as the case may be) is much more likely to work with you if met with decency and patience.

“Your customer service rep isn’t doing an easy job and they want to help, so why not start on the right foot?”

Secondly, customers should do their research before jumping on a call with their provider.

Glenn Goad, CEO at Earth Link, suggests going back over records to find out how long you’ve been with a provider for.

He urged customers to properly prepare by building a case for themselves as a “desirable customer”.

For example, if a customer has been with their provider for several years then a provider will be much more inclined to keep them on.

It’s also advisable before negotiating to know exactly what it is you need and have an idea of how much you are willing to pay each month.

This also includes knowing what sort of broadband you require and how fast you need your internet to be.

If they can’t offer a lower price, then experts suggest asking what freebies are available.

An AT&T spokesperson told CNet: “The”What discounts or special offers are available to you?

There may be discount offers for qualifying customers that you should inquire about.

Some providers may also offer subscriptions for streaming and other services that could make a package more enticing”.

Lastly, experts warn not to play hardball if you aren’t absolutely sure you’ll be able to secure service elsewhere.
