SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Project Prison Reset task force may have another possible men’s prison site in Sioux Falls at its July 8 meeting.
About 148 acres that border Benson Road have been submitted as a possible site, according to the task force meeting agenda. The property is north of Gage Brothers, with North Bahnson Avenue to the west and Sycamore Avenue to the east. It is also south of the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.
This new site is near a site of about 137 total acres split into two parcels near North Bahnson Avenue and Interstate 229. The property is owned by Sweetman Partners LLP.
Task force member Rep. Greg Jamison plans to meet with several Sioux Falls city council members on Wednesday afternoon to review about 27 acres near the existing men’s prison and the site near I-229. KELOLAND News will be covering this story.
North Hall Avenue travels through the new site listed on Wednesday. It is described as a dirt road that cuts the corner of the property. The property submission said the road could be vacated.
No possible price is listed but the submission said the purchase price could be negotiated.
According to the submission, the property is owned by TCB LLC which appears to be a limited liability company registered in South Dakota. One of its listed registered agents is Patty Nohr.
Since the task force met in June, three new sites had been submitted. The city of Box Elder withdrew its submission last week because of public concerns on available workforce, possible negative impact on future economic development and negative perception, a city official told KELOLAND News. The second site is still a possibility and the third, is the new site listed on Wednesday.
The task force decided in June to have a consultant focus on possible sites on property owned by the South Dakota Department of Corrections and sites submitted by Mitchell and Worthing. Sites in Mitchell and Worthing have drawn opposition from the public and some task force members.
