Athletics legend and world record holder, 61, banned indefinitely over safeguarding concern

LONG jump world record holder Mike Powell has been suspended indefinitely over a safeguarding concern, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) revealed earlier today.

Powell, 61, now works as a coach for Azusa Pacific University in California.

Two-time Olympic silver medallist Powell, who joined Azusa Pacific’s track and field coaching staff in 2022, set the men’s long jump world record of 8.95 metres at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo.

The AIU say that Powell is barred from all World Athletics-sanctioned activities.

This means that he cannot receive accreditation at World Athletics Series Events, as well as any competitions or events organised or sanctioned by World Athletics, its Area Associations or Member Federations.

Powell is also prohibited from attending hospitality or private access venues linked to World Athletics Series Events, even if invited by organisers.

The AIU say the suspension could be varied on application or appeal.

In addition to coaching, Powell also worked as an analyst following his retirement.

The world-record holder previously provided punditry for Yahoo Sports.

Powell has further athletic excellence within his family.

His daughter Micha, 30, is a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, having won the 4x400m women’s relay event in Birmingham three years ago.

Micha’s mother Rosey Edeh, meanwhile, competed in hurdles at the 1996 Olympics.
