Mystery of Captain Cook’s lost ship is SOLVED after 250 years as scientists discover sunken remains of HMS Endeavour

CAPTAIN COOK’S ship, HMS Endeavour, which the adventurer used to explore Australia, has been identified after a 250 year long mystery.

The vessel was the first European ship to reach Eastern Australia, in 1770, and went on to circumnavigate the main islands of New Zealand.

It was then sold, renamed the Lord Sandwich and was last seen in the US in 1778, during the American War of Independence.

During the war, the ship was scuttled (intentionally sunk) to create a blockade to prevent French ships from entering the harbour and supporting the American forces.

And it has now been confirmed that a shipwreck off Newport Harbour, Rhode Island, USA, called RI 2394, is in fact the HMS Endeavour.

In a new report the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) announced the verdict, after 25 years of studying the wreck.

“This final report is the culmination of 25 years of detailed and meticulous archaeological study on this important vessel”, said museum director Daryl Karp.

“It has involved underwater investigation in the US and extensive research in institutions across the globe.”

“This final report marks our definitive statement on the project.”

The ship was hard to identify because anything that would have been of value, such as a bell, would have been stripped from the boat before it was intentionally sunk.

However, experts were able to determine that the shipwreck is the lost ship by comparing it with plans for the Endeavour.

For example, they discovered timbers which matched with the placement of the main and fore masts of the ship.

Additionally, measurements from the wreck corresponded to those taken during a 1768 survey of the ship.

Analysis of the ship’s wood also revealed that it had come from Europe, which is consistent with records show that the Endeavour was repaired there in 1776.

ANMM archaeologist, Kieran Hosty, said: “We’ll never find anything on this site that screams Endeavour. You’ll never find a sign saying ‘Cook was here’.

“We will never see a ship’s bell with Endeavour crossed out and Lord Sandwich inscribed on it.

Who was Captain Cook?

Captain James Cook was one of Britain’s most renowned explorers, celebrated for his contributions to navigation and mapping during the 18th century.

While he charted the eastern coastline of Australia in 1770 and claimed it for Britain, Cook was not the first European to encounter the continent, as Dutch explorers had sighted it earlier in the 17th century. His expeditions, however, significantly advanced European knowledge of the region and laid the groundwork for British settlement.

Similarly, Cook’s role in New Zealand’s history was pivotal but not first in sequence. Dutch explorer Abel Tasman had visited New Zealand in 1642, long before Cook’s arrival. Nevertheless, Cook’s meticulous circumnavigation and mapping of New Zealand were instrumental in understanding its geography and establishing connections with the indigenous Māori people.

“We’ve got a whole series of things pointing to RI 2394 as being HMB Endeavour.

“The timbers are British timbers.

“The size of all the timber scantlings are almost identical to Endeavour, and I’m talking within millimetres – not inches, but millimetres.

“The stem scarf is identical, absolutely identical.

“This stem scarf is also a very unique feature – we’ve gone through a whole bunch of 18th-century ships plans, and we can’t find anything else like it.”

However, the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project previously said the identification is “premature” and has not yet ruled out that the Endeavour could be another shipwreck .

Only 15 percent of the ship remains and researchers are now focused on what to do to preserve it.

Nezza causes MLB national anthem controversy in ICE protest before breaking down in tears after defying LA Dodgers ban

A NATIONAL anthem performer claims she was told by the Los Angeles Dodgers she had to sing in English.

But the musician defied orders and belted out a Spanish version of the US anthem instead.

Nezza, real name Vanessa Hernandez, was tasked with singing the Star Spangled Banner before an MLB game this weekend.

The 30-year-old took to the field at Dodger Stadium before the game against the San Francisco Giants.

Her performance came amid protests and unrest in Los Angeles after ICE raids.

And it took place on the same day as “No Kings” protests in the city against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

Nezza posted a video to her 350,000 TikTok followers which had more than seven million views.

She wrote on the clip, “Watch the Dodgers tell me I can’t sing the Spanish Star Spangled Banner that Roosevelt literally commissioned in 1945.”

An unidentified person was heard telling her, “We are going to do the song in English today.”

Nezza’s video then cut to a clip of her singing on the field in Spanish.

“So I did it anyway,” she added as a caption.

In a follow-up video on TikTok, the 30-year-old explained her decision while fighting back tears.

“I didn’t think I would be met with any sort of no, especially because we’re in LA and with everything happening,” she said

“And I’ve sang the national anthem many times in my life.

“But today out of all days, I could not. I’m sorry.

“I just could not believe when she walked in and told me ‘no.’

“But I just felt like I needed to do it para mi gente.”

The last three words translate into English as “for my people.”

Nezza continued, “I’m proud of myself for doing that today.

“Because my parents are immigrants and they’ve been citizens my whole life at this point.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers have not made a public statement on the issue.

The Los Angeles Times reports that a club executive told them they would not be making any comment.

Asda reveals huge shake-up to 180 in-store cafes including new menu items and digital screens

ASDA is set to roll out a huge shake-up across 180 in-store cafes with the launch of new menu items and digital ordering screens.

One of the UK’s biggest supermarkets is pumping £10million into freshening up dozens of cafes.

Shoppers will still be able to get “Kids Eat for £1” meal deals at the cafes[/caption]

The retailer will start the makeover this month with all works set to be complete by the end of October.

The 180 cafes, managed by Compass Group, will be upgraded to include new digital ordering screens where shoppers can pick what food and drink they want.

Customers will also be able to order from their tables or via staffed tills.

A number of existing menu items will continue to be on sale including full English breakfasts, fish and chips, lasagne and jacket potatoes.

But some new ones will be added as well, including smashed avocado on toast, katsu chicken curry, topped salad bowls and wraps.

Shoppers will be able to buy full 12inch pizzas or single pizza slices from the cafes for the first time as well.

Customers can pick from flavours including margherita, pepperoni, American sizzler, spicy chicken and meat feast.

There will also be a range of hot drinks on offer as well as cold ones like iced coffees and cakes.

Asda’s “Kids Eat for £1” café meal deals will remain available.

We have asked Asda how much some of the menu items will cost and for the full list of 180 stores where cafes will be freshened up and will update this story when we have heard back.

Ian McEvans, vice president of commercial food at Asda, said: “This significant investment alongside allows us to bring a new look and feel, as well making improvements to the service and a refresh of the menu.”

It comes after some other changes at Asda, including the retailer ditching Star Products on its loyalty scheme at the start of the year.

However, the move to axe the feature came as the supermarket brought back its Rollback price commitment at the end of January.

Asda introduced the price cuts at its more than 1,200 stores meaning lower prices on 4,000 products.

Then in March, prices were lowered on 10,000 products by up to 45% as the retailer looked to steal its rivals’ customers.

New Asda boss Allan Leighton insisted the supermarket’s turnaround was on last month, despite the supermarket’s sales falling 3.1% in the four months to the end of April.

How to save at Asda

Shop the budget range

Savvy shopper Eilish Stout-Cairns recommends that shoppers grab items from Asda’s Just Essentials range.

She said: “Asda’s budget range is easy to spot as it’s bright yellow! Keep your eyes peeled for yellow and you’ll find their Just Essentials range.

“It’s great value and I’ve found it has a much wider selection of budget items compared to other supermarkets.

 Sign up to Asda Rewards

The savvy-saver also presses on the importance of signing up to Asda’s reward scheme.

She said: “Asda Rewards is free to join and if you shop at Asda you should absolutely sign up.

“As an Asda Rewards member, you’ll get exclusive discounts and offers, and you’ll also be able to earn 10% cashback on Star Products.

“This will go straight into your cashpot, and once you’ve earned at least £1, you can transfer the money in your cashpot into ASDA vouchers.

We’ve previously rounded up the best supermarket loyalty schemes – including the ones that will save you the most money.

Look out for booze deals

Eilish always suggests that shoppers looking to buy booze look out for bargain deals.

She said: “Asda often has an alcohol offer on: buy six bottles and save 25%.

“The offer includes selected bottles with red, white and rose options, as well as prosecco. There are usually lots of popular bottles included, for example, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot and Freixenet Prosecco D.O.C.

“Obviously, the more expensive the bottles you choose, the more you save.”

Join Facebook groups

The savvy saver also recommends that fans of Asda join Facebook groups to keep in the know about the latest bargains in-store.

Eilish said: “I recommend joining the Latest Deals Facebook Group to find out about the latest deals and new launches in store.

“Every day, more than 250,000 deal hunters share their latest bargain finds and new releases.

“For example, recently a member shared a picture of Asda’s new Barbie range spotted in store.

“Another member shared the bargain outdoor plants she picked up, including roses for 47p, blackcurrant bushes for 14p and topiary trees for 14p.”

Mr Leighton urged Sun readers to come back to see the UK’s third largest grocery chain’s revitalised stores.

In May last year, Asda said it would invest majorly overhaul 170 stores as part of a £50million makeover.

SUPERMARKETS SHAKING UP IN-STORE CAFES

The latest announcement from Asda on its in-store cafe upgrades comes as two other major supermarkets row back on their cafe offerings.

Sainsbury’s shut 61 in-store cafes in April as it looks to explore “future opportunities” for the spaces.

The retailer said it was closing its remaining in-store cafes due to lower footfall and as its hybrid cafe and food halls become more popular.

It is likely to replace the cafes with restaurants run by franchises, such as Starbucks and Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

In March, Morrisons said it would shut 52 cafes as part of a huge overhaul of its store estate.

The retailer also said 18 Market Kitchens, 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters and four pharmacies would shut.

A SEEMINGLY normal house on the outside has some very quirky features visible after you step through the front door.

The eccentric home in Shropshire has hit the market for £124,000.

A house in Shropshire has gone on sale with an exposed toilet at the top of the stairs – leaving its users in full view of anyone nearby.

The first floor bog has no door or walls to mask the sights, sounds and smells that could occur when it’s occupied.

It’s a dream come true for anyone prospective buyers seeking a live studio audience experience on the loo.

The person who chose to design their toilet in full view of anyone coming upstairs is unknown.

But the property, on Birch Road, Ellesmere, seems absolutely normal when spotted from the street.

Despite its lack of boundaries, the two-bed has been described by estate agents as “quirky and characterful.”

The mid-terrace town cottage has a kitchen and dining room, living room, master bedroom and study or second bedroom.

But its best feature is a large garden space, which expands to around 100 square feet.

The property listing OnTheMarket reads: “A quirky and characterful 1/2 bedroom mid-terrace town cottage boasting a range of traditional features and excellent gardens.

“It’s conveniently situated on the edge of the north Shropshire lakeland town of Ellesmere.

“Internally, the property offers a deceptive amount of characterful living accommodation retaining many original features.

“Externally, the property provides excellent gardens which have been much improved by the current vendors.

“They now comprise a number of distinct areas.

“These are, briefly: a raised decking area, children’s play area, attractive gazebo, and bark chipped area with garden storage shed.”

The website doesn’t make specific reference to the easy-access bog, however.

Instead it specifies: “A low flush WC, pedestal hand basin separate.”

But members of the public who’ve scoped out the property are fascinated by the viewer-friendly toilet.

One stated: “I never thought open-plan bedroom toilets would catch on but they have.

“The whole place is just weird.”

Another said: “I genuinely have nightmares like this.”

One other added: “If you really wanted to squeeze in a loo upstairs, based on the floor plan, surely you’d switch the loo and basin around?”

Halls Estate agents are advertising the property for sale by private treaty.

Who are Mehakdeep & Sehajpal Singh and how long were they jailed for murdering DPD driver Aurman Singh?

A DPD driver was ambushed while doing his rounds and brutally murdered by a gang armed with blades and blunt objects.

Here we take a look at two of the people convicted of the cowardly crime — Mehakdeep and Sehajpal Singh.

Who are Mehakdeep and Sehajpal Singh?

Mehakdeep Singh, aged 24, and Sehajpal Singh, aged 26, are both from Tipton in the West Midlands.

They were part of a gang that carried out a “meticulously planned” and savage murder of DPD delivery driver Aurman Singh in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, on 21 August 2023.

The attack was far from random — evidence presented at their trial showed that the group used inside information from a contact at DPD to learn Aurman’s delivery route.

On the day of the murder, they lay in wait for him on Berwick Avenue, Coton Hill, as he made deliveries.

When Aurman arrived, the group ambushed him with an arsenal of weapons.

Mehakdeep Singh wielded a hockey stick, while Sehajpal Singh used a shovel during the horrific assault.

‘Calculated & brutal’

The attack was described by police as “calculated and brutal” — with the clear intention to kill.

Detective Sergeant Mat Crisp from West Mercia Police’s Major Investigation Unit said: “It was not a robbery that went wrong, it was planned and Aurman was their sole target.

“Following an incident the previous day that involved Aurman, the group used a contact to access inside information from his employer to learn Aurman’s delivery route before lying in wait for him on a quiet Shropshire street.

“The group used an arsenal of weapons against Aurman, who was defenceless.

“There is no doubt in my mind what their intention was, and that was to kill him.”

“Exactly a year ago [on April 11, 2024] five men were sentenced to a combined total of 122 years for their part in Aurman’s death, and today I am pleased a further two men have been given a 28-year prison sentence for their role in this senseless killing.

There are no words that could ever explain the impact this tragedy has had on me and my family

Family statement

Aurman, aged 23 and from Smethwick, was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the murder, Mehakdeep and Sehajpal Singh fled in a white Mercedes, which was later found abandoned in Shrewsbury.

They ordered a taxi to Shrewsbury railway station, took a train to Wolverhampton, then left the UK.

Traced and arrested

Following an international manhunt, Mehakdeep and Sehajpal Singh were traced and arrested in Hohenzell, Austria, on 20 May 2024.

On 31 March 2025, after a three-week trial at Stafford Crown Court, both Mehakdeep Singh and Sehajpal Singh were unanimously found guilty of murder by a jury.

On April 11, 2025, they were each sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 28 years before being considered for parole.

The judge described the murder as “meticulously planned and executed,” emphasising that Aurman Singh was “completely unaware” and “defenceless” when attacked.

The police highlighted the use of inside information and the deliberate nature of the killing, stating there was “no doubt” the intention was to kill.

Aurman’s family released a moving tribute after his death: “There are no words that could ever explain the impact this tragedy has had on me and my family.

“Today a mother will grow old without her son.

In total seven men have been convicted in relation to the murder of Aurman Singh[/caption]

“A sister will grow up without her brother.

“We don’t want what has happened to us to happen to another family.

“We would like to thank the police for conducting their investigation diligently and supporting us through this tough time.”

Residents told of their horror after witnessing the aftermath of the brutal attack.

Back in August 2023, one told MailOnline: “I saw four men, carrying a variety of weapons, jump into the Audi and two others get into the front of a white Mercedes.

Police described the crime as ‘calculated and brutal’[/caption]

“None of them looked as though they had stolen anything.

“They didn’t seem to be carrying any parcels from the van.

“They just had weapons which looked to be a machete, baseball bat and what appeared to be some sort of shovel.

“The cars did a three-wheel turn and they sped off.

“One of the men shouted something before they escaped but I couldn’t hear what they said.”

Prosecutors told the court that the exact reason behind the murder could never be definitively established[/caption]

Motive

The motive for the murder of Aurman Singh remains somewhat unclear.

Prosecutors told the court that the exact reason behind the murder could never be definitively established.

However, evidence presented during the trial suggested that the killing followed an incident at a kabaddi tournament in Derbyshire the day before the ambush.

It was suggested in court that the murder was an act of revenge for what happened at the tournament, but this was never confirmed

Mehakdeep and Sehajpal Singh were not the only ones convicted in connection with this murder.

Five other men had already been jailed for their roles, including four who received 28-year sentences for murder, plus the “inside man” from DPD who received 10 years for manslaughter.

These previously convicted men are:

  • Arshdeep Singh, 24, from Tipton, Dudley — guilty of murder
  • Jagdeep Singh, 23, from Dudley — guilty of murder
  • Shivdeep Singh, 27, from Smethwick — guilty of murder
  • Manjot Singh, 24, from Smethwick — guilty of murder
  • Sukhmandeep Singh, 24, from Orton Goldhay, Peterborough — guilty of manslaughter

BBC2’s Murder 24/7 is airing an episode exploring the murder of Aurman Singh on Monday, June 16, 2025 at 9pm.

Real Betis ‘make offer to buy Antony from Man Utd in rarely seen £17m co-ownership transfer’

REAL BETIS have reportedly made an offer to buy Antony from Manchester United in a rare £17million co-ownership transfer.

The Brazilian winger was shipped out on loan to Spain in January after failing to impress Ruben Amorim.

Real Betis are looking to sign Antony on the cheap in a rarely-seen deal[/caption]

Antony looked a different player under Manuel Pellegrini as his five goals and two assists helped Betis qualify for the Europa League.

He even picked up a silver medal after finishing as a runner-up to Chelsea in the Conference League final.

But Antony is now back at United after his Betis loan came to an end.

The former Ajax man cost £86m to sign in 2022 but has struggled for form and is expected to depart United once again.

Antony has been linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen for another reunion with Erik ten Hag.

But Betis are hopeful of bringing him back to Spain.

And ABC Sevilla claims club chiefs travelled to England for talks with United last week.

It’s reckoned that Betis proposed a rarely-seen deal that would see them pay just £17m to become theoretical co-owners of Antony.

BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS

Outright co-ownership is common in European football but is banned in the Premier League.

So in practice, it would see Antony join Betis for a low figure, while leaving United entitled to a high sell-on clause potentially worth 50 per cent.

It’s claimed that Betis chiefs are now confident of striking a deal, but the Red Devils are insisting on a higher fee up front.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made no secret of his desire to raise funds for new transfers.

And accepting just £17m would see United make a staggering £69m loss on a player signed just three years ago.

Yet Betis hope the lure of a 50 per cent sell-on clause will turn the deal in their favour and could even be prepared to up the initial fee slightly.
