At least 9 killed across US by flesh-eating bacteria ‘contracted by eating raw oysters’ as experts stumped by case spike

AT least nine people have died so far this year after contracting a dangerous flesh-eating bacteria that can hide in oysters.

This summer, Americans should heed the latest health warning when choosing their meals, as cases of Vibrio vulnificus have taken a dangerous turn.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, a serious infection of the bacteria can lead to necrotizing fasciitis, which is when the flesh around a wound dies.

Many people who contract the infection can get seriously ill and need to have a limb amputated due to the bacteria.

About one in five people who fall sick from Vibrio vulnificus die, according to the CDC.

While about 10% of cases stem from contaminated raw oysters, the vast majority come from swimming with open flesh wounds.

This year, cases are cropping up in southern states where warm brackish waters – a mix of salt and fresh water – create the perfect breeding ground.

In Louisiana, 17 people have been sickened for far, and four of the patients died of the illness, according to a July 30 Louisiana Department of Health report.

Florida has seen a massive 16 cases in 2025, and five of those who were infected died, the Florida Department of Health said.

In Texas, five have been infected, but there were no deaths, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Meanwhile, 13 cases were reported in Mississippi and 25 more were confirmed in Alabama, officials confirmed to the New York Post.

Swimmers with shallow wounds, including just a scratch, could be at risk of getting an infection.

VICTIMS REMEMBERED

One victim has been named as Basil Kennedy, a 77-year-old dad who lived in Mississippi.

He scraped his leg on a trailer parked outside his home, cleaned the cut, and then put on a Band-Aid.

Just three days later, he was declining in an emergency room with his organs going into septic shock, his daughters told NOLA.com.

Another victim was 78-year-old Alan Kidd, who died of the infection over the weekend.

He went wade fishing with a tiny cut on his leg before falling fatally ill.

“He was just the best. He was all about family. He was all about giving. He was just a really good person,” his daughter Susan McNiel told ABC affiliate WMBB.

EERIE SIGNS

Initial signs and symptoms of a Vibria infection include fever, vomiting, chills, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps.

If the bacteria gets into the bloodstream, it could cause chills, dangerously blow blood pressure, and blistering skin lesions.

If an open wound starts to turn red and painful with swelling, discoloration, and discharge, you should get checked for a Vibria infection.

Health officials have warned that those living on the coasts could be infected after a hurricane blows through.

“People were trying to rescue pets or belongings,” University of South Florida professor John Sinnott told Fox affiliate WITI.

“They weren’t thinking about what was happening to their legs or feet.”

People who have liver disease, cancer, diabetes, HIV, or thalassemia are at an increased risk of infections and could have severe complications.

People undergoing treatments that suppress their immune system are also at an increased risk.

The signs of Vibrio vulnificus

Since the sickness can come on quickly, its important to be aware of the symptoms.

  • Chills
  • Skin redness
  • blisters on the skin
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Fast heart rate
  • Fever

Mattison suffered a devastating injury during the Dolphins’ first preseason game on Sunday.

He was tackled on a 21-yard pass play against the Chicago Bears and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

From there, Mattison was taken into surgery on Sunday night.

He is expected to make a full recovery.

Fans were devastated to hear how extreme Mattison’s injury was, and shared their well wishes for him on social media.

“Awful man prayers up,” one fan said.

“Ugh what a tough break. Prayers up,” another fan said.

“Dang poor guy. Prayers for fast healing,” a third fan said.

“Hoping for the best,” a fourth fan said.

“Prayers up for him, terrible to deal with this especially in a preseason game,” a fifth fan said.

Mattison made 14 appearances for the Las Vegas Raiders last season, starting seven of those games.

He ran for 420 yards with four touchdowns.

Mattison spent the first five seasons of his career with the Minnesota Vikings.

He primarily served as the backup running back there, going for 2,370 yards and 11 touchdowns with the team.

Migrants ‘urinated on’ after hundreds protest & sleep under tarpaulins outside Paris’ iconic town hall

TWO men have reportedly urinated on a pregnant homeless woman and her children in an alleged vile assault on the streets of Paris.

The young family were sleeping on the ground outside the iconic Paris City Hall alongside hundreds of migrants when they claim they were degraded.

A pair of Parisians, aged around 20, are accused of urinating on the mum and her daughters, aged 6 and 14 months, at 1am on Sunday.

The claim has come from Utopia 56 Paris association who organised the gathering of homeless people in France.

They described the incidents as “extremely serious” and confirmed a complaint has been filed.

The humiliated and scared mother has said the ordeal has left her children crying for days.

She said: “Since then, my daughter hasn’t been able to sleep. She says they’re going to come back and pee on her.

“She won’t stop crying, and other children make fun of her.”

The men fled the scene when they were spotted by Utopia 56 Paris staff, according to the organisation.

Two officers were alerted and managed to track down the men.

One has reportedly been arrested.

Utopia 56 Paris released a statement on the alleged attack as they detailed why hundreds of homeless people have been camping outside Paris City Hall.

They said: “This occurred after approximately 300 homeless people, including a dozen unaccompanied minors and around a hundred young children, had just spent five days and five nights on the forecourt of Paris City Hall.

“They are simply asking for the law to be respected, to escape extreme poverty, and to access emergency accommodation.

“The humanitarian situation there is deteriorating by the day.”

Dozens of families have been seen sleeping on the floor using tarpaulin sheets as roofs as part of the latest demonstrations in Paris.

Nearly 300 migrants, mostly women and children, have been gathered since August 5.

Those taking part are simply asking for shelter, according to Utopia 56 Paris.

Pictures of the event show families taking shelter under the tarpaulin with some wrapped in blankets and others using sleeping bags.

Many of them have packed up their belongings into plastic shipping bags.

The makeshift tents are surrounded by metal gates with the sun beaming down on the migrants throughout the day.

Nathan Lequeux, coordinator of the Utopia 56 association’s Paris branch, told InfoMigrants: “We will not move until a lasting solution is found.”

The organisation has been handing out breakfast and lunch to those outside with the numbers of migrants increasing each day.

About 90 children are outside the building with Utopia 56 counting more than 30 under three year olds.

It comes as France has been battling with a major migrant issue in recent months.

In July, French riot cops were attacked by a mob hurling rocks just yards away from the shore.

The shocking clashes between migrants and cops were caught on camera while small fires are alight in the road near a park in Gravelines.

Footage showed a group throwing rocks from afar in the direction of the officers in the northern coastal town early on Friday morning.

It comes after a new migrant deal was agreed between the UK and France in a bid to tackle the small boats crisis.

Last week, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed a one in, one out migrant returns deal in a bid to crack down on the crossings and the people smuggling gangs who operate them.

But France will be able to choose which migrants to take back – prompting fears that the UK will be stuck with dangerous criminals.

The details of each migrant selected for return will be given to France, allowing it to reject those with a criminal record or deemed a security risk.

Both France and the UK will have a veto over which of the small boat migrants they take in.

Britain will take into account if the migrants have a connection to the country and if they have lived here before.
