Your cable bills are rising again – the step-by-step tactics to cut $240 fast
CABLE bills are on the rise again due to a variety of factors, forcing Americans to shell out hundreds of dollars more per year for the same services.
Rather than concede to the higher prices, consumers can take four steps to slash their annual cable costs by $240 or more.

Major cable providers like Comcast and Spectrum hiked prices last year, joined by several smaller cable and satellite TV companies such as DIRECTV, forcing customers to pay hundreds of dollars extra per year.
Cable bills are still on the rise, increasing thanks to factors such as including rising programming costs and fees, as well as the bundling of services like TV and internet.
One customer, Emily Guy Birken, for example, saw her bill suddenly bump up by $30 per month – or $360 annually – after paying around $120 monthly for cable, internet, and home phone.
After a little searching, she realized that her household’s introductory bundle price had expired, resulting in their new $150 per month bill.
“Even though we should’ve expected the price hike, we still couldn’t afford it. I knew I would have to call our cable provider,” Birken wrote on the personal finance blog MoneyNing.
While she dreaded reaching out to the cable company, fearing that a productive negotiation was “out of reach” for her, she discovered that “it’s possible for just about anyone to negotiate a lower cable bill.”
Birken shared four tactics to help you ensure that negotiating with your cable provider goes smoothly, helping you to save money.
1. HAVE REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS
The customer first advised others to have an idea of what a reasonable discount is before attempting to negotiate.
“For instance, there was no way I could reduce my $150 bill to a $75 one, no matter how much I may have wanted it that way,” Birken wrote.
She suggested researching the current rates for competing companies as well as their promotions for new customers.
This will provide not only an idea of a reasonable price for your services, but also a great bargaining line.
“Company X only charges $99 per month for this bundle. I’d prefer to stay with you, but I really need my cable bill to fit within my budget. What can you do for me?” wrote Birken.
2. DON’T BE TOO AGGRESSIVE
Birken warned that many customers make the mistake of approaching negotiation with their cable company too aggressively.
“Many newbie negotiators think that they need to be inflexible and insistent in order to get their way,” she wrote, noting that it’s easy to get upset over a bill increase.
She explained, however, that the customer service rep receiving your call is also a person, and they likely won’t respond well to aggression.
A more productive strategy is to take a friendly and calm approach, kindly asking the representative to help you fix your issue.
“They’re much more likely to go the extra mile for a nice, friendly customer than they are for a snarling, angry one,” said Birken.
Other ways to lower your cable bill

- Consider alternatives: if you are willing to get rid of traditional TV, check out streaming services and their costs to see if they meet your needs
- Assess your current package: review your current cable package and see if you can downgrade to a lower tier or remove unnecessary add-ons
- Contact your cable company: inquire about potential discounts or promotional offers to see if your company will adjust your bill.
3. DON’T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER
Birken warned readers that it was unlikely that the rep on the other end of the line would have the authority to significantly tweak your bill.
“Even if they assure you that there’s nothing anyone can do, ask to speak to their supervisor,” she wrote.
“The higher up the chain you go, the more authority you’ll find, which means that eventually you should reach someone who does have the power to negotiate.”
4. THREATEN TO LEAVE
Birken advised consumers to use the leverage of leaving as a negotiation tactic.
This trick can work even if you live in an area where only one cable company is available, as was the case with Birken.
When she reached out to her cable company, she told them she was considering dropping cable altogether, as her household only really needed internet and phone services.
“Our provider instead agreed to reduce our rate by $20, which is what we’d save by only dropping cable, but still let us keep all three services,” said Birken.
By using her tried-and-true negotiation tactics, the customer managed to save her household $240 each year on their overall bundle bill.
Some consumers opt for streaming services rather than traditional cable TV, but they are not immune from price bumps either.
One TV streaming giant hiked prices for subscribers by 40% with viewers now paying up to $16.99 a month for shows.
