When is it too hot to work? Office rights explained for workers

TEMPERATURES continue to rise, and many will be feeling hot under their work collars.

The MET Office has forecast that temperatures could hit up to 28C across some parts of the UK.

A desk fan in the foreground with a person drinking water in the background.
Woman cools down using a fan and water bottle in a hot office

Yet while these balmy conditions may feel like we’re on holiday, for those who have to face days in the office and can’t be with a fan at home, these are your rights when it gets too hot to work.

When is it too hot to work?

Unfortunately, it’s not simple.

Firstly, there’s no minimum or maximum temperature for offices or other places of work defined by law.

But, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has said: “An employer must provide a working environment which is, as far as is reasonably practical, safe and without risks to health.”

The issue is that this definition of what is “reasonable” and “safe” is debatable.

National Accident Helpline legal operations director John Kushnick said: “Temperatures in the workplace are covered by the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, which place a legal obligation on employers to provide a ‘reasonable’ temperature in the workplace.

“They suggest that the minimum temperature in a workplace should be at least 16ºC, or if the work involves rigorous physical exertion, it can be 13ºC.

“Unfortunately, there are no laws which specifically state that workers can stop working if the temperature gets too hot or cold.”

But if a workplace does feel too hot, there are some typical signs to look out for if it feels like someone is suffering from heat stress:

  • An inability to concentrate
  • Muscle cramps
  • Heat rash
  • Severe thirst – a late symptom of heat stress
  • Fainting
  • Heat exhaustion – fatigue, giddiness, nausea, headache, moist skin
  • Heat stroke – hot dry skin, confusion, convulsions and eventual loss of consciousness. This is the most severe disorder and can result in death if not detected at an early stage

Bosses should undertake a risk assessment if enough staff complain about working conditions.

The independent health and safety regulator also said:  “If a significant number of employees are complaining about thermal discomfort, your employer should carry out a risk assessment, and act on the results of that assessment.”

The HSE has previously suggested bosses should ensure their workers have access to water and monitor their wellbeing in hot weather.

What’s more, if a staff member is deemed vulnerable, such as those going through menopause or who are pregnant, this should be taken into account.

In this instance, vulnerable employees may need to work from home. But this is not possible for everyone, and so businesses may need to adapt.

Fans, relaxed dress codes, or turning up the air conditioning are all measures that can make the office environment more comfortable.

What are the temperature recommendations?

The Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers has helpfully recommended the following temperatures for different areas of work.

  • Heavy work in factories: 13°C
  • Light work in factories: 16°C
  • Hospital wards and shops: 18°C
  • Offices and dining rooms: 20°C

If you have to take public transport, what are your rights?

Much like in the office, these are up for debate as each transport company can set its own policies, and so during a heatwave, there are no laws about temperatures.

Therefore, over the coming weeks, travellers are in for some pretty hot journeys.

And while Transport for London has said all Tubes will be air-conditioned by 2030, let’s not forget the extremely high temperatures Londoners face on the Tube, with commuters claiming they experienced conditions of 42C in 2018!

So until the time that commuting is not like walking into an oven, it is recommended that travellers take water bottles and, if possible, wear loose-fitting clothing which is cool and light.

Commuters who travel by car are also sharing tips to save money and stay cool when travelling. There are also easy ways to fight the heat at home with some “air con” hacks.

Cops unveil new £180k bullet-proof battle machine – 18 armoured 4x4s to tackle extreme riots unveiled by Met

ARMOURED cars have been spotted cruising London’s streets after cops splashed out on military 4x4s to tackle extreme rioting.

With matte-grey paint, flashing blue lights and the word “police” on the side written in block capitals, the hefty vehicles are hard to miss.

Several of the military-grade tanks intended to tackle rioting have been spotted weaving between lanes in London.

These are the “Sandcats” – the newest addition to the Met Police‘s fleet, estimated to cost around £180,000.

The mammoth 9,000kg 4x4s can transport up to 11 officers and stands at 7ft 7in tall.

The new armoured cars will be used for “high-risk armed policing operations” and 18 have been ordered in total.

The Met Police said the new trucks aren’t yet being used in operations.

The force is currently training drivers, which is why they have been seen driving around London.

A spokesperson said: “These are specialist armoured vehicles used for high-risk armed policing operations, by officers deployed at airports and as a contingency option for use in the most serious public disorder the like of which we thankfully rarely see.”

Sandcats are manufactured by Israeli company Plasan and have been used by the military in several countries.

According to the company website, the Sandcat Tigris is the preferred choice for both the IDF and Ministry of Defence.

They replace the older Jankel models, which were deployed during the 2011 riots but have very rarely been used.

Violent riots broke out across the UK last summer in the wake of misinformation about the Southport tragedy[/caption]

The bullet-resistant Jankel Guardians that the force previously used cost about £100,000 each.

The seven-tonne personnel carrier could withstand AK-47 bullets and had a bomb-proof floor.

Over the past year or so, the UK has been rocked by disorder and rioting in the streets.

This week, masked yobs lobbed petrol bombs and fireworks at cops across four days of chaos across Northern Ireland.

Police described the riots as “racially-motivated hate attacks” with a senior officer slamming the scenes as “racist thuggery”.

Several houses even put up signs identifying their residents as British or Filipino in an apparent attempt to avoid being targeted.

Violence originally erupted on Monday, stemming from an initially peaceful gathering to support a girl and her family after an alleged sexual assault.

Girl ‘whose sex assault by teen boys’ sparked ‘racist’ riots wants violence to end as 4th night of carnage erupts

By Emily Jane Davies

A YOUNG girl whose sexual assault by teenage boys sparked riots across Northern Ireland has called for an end to the violence.

Northern Ireland Police Chief Jon Boutcher said the girl had been “further traumatised” by the riots – as the fourth night of chaos unfolded yesterday.

Police quickly clamped down on hundreds of rioters who were spotted throwing missiles and petrol bombs in Portadown – less than an hour from where the riots started – last night.

Shocking footage showed thugs lobbing live fireworks at rows of police riot vans.

The chaos began in Ballymena on Monday night, hours after two 14-year-old boys appeared in court charged with attempted rape of a girl.

The boys confirmed their names – which cannot be reported – and their ages through a Romanian interpreter at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court.

Cops decried the mass carnage which followed as “racist thuggery”.

Northern Ireland‘s Chief Constable told how the girl’s family had been left “mortified” by the horrific scenes.

Speaking yesterday, he said: “I reiterate the retraumatising of this poor girl, she’s been through enough through what happened to her on Saturday evening. She doesn’t want any of this.

“I know the family are mortified. I’ve spoken to them personally, they’ve asked me to make this plea.#

“This girl’s family and this girl want it to end. Our communities want it to end. We need it to end.

“Stop this violence. We will come after you. We will arrest you. We will prosecute you successfully.

“I want to specifically mention the 41 police officers who’ve been injured. Each of those officers have put themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities.

“It is not in any way a way for a civilised society to behave and it must stop now.”

Northern Ireland Police Chief Jon Boutcher said the girl had been “further traumatised” by the riots.

Last summer, Britain was a tinderbox as widespread unrest and disorder broke out following misinformation about the Southport child killer.

Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice Da Silva Aguiar were murdered in a knife attack and social media posts falsely claimed they were killed by an illegal migrant.

The disgraceful rioters torched cars, police stations and mosques.

In 2020, Scotland Yard put out a notice saying it wanted to buy a new fleet of military-style trucks to tackle public disorder, firearms incidents and riots in the capital.

It wanted security, fire-fighting and defence equipment and armour plating.

Last year, it was reported that Police Scotland’s £282,000 battle machine meant to be driven by “action man officers” has never been used.

The gas-guzzling 4×4 beasts are used by military specialists in warzones and by police tackling drug cartels in South America.

Yet, Police Scotland’s bulletproof Sandcat has been locked in storage collecting dust for two years.

Insiders have previously claimed the reason it has remained idle is from a lack of officers able to drive it, with regular training needed to operate it.

The force has refused to comment on how many of its staff can use the 4×4 Sandcat.

Underneath the Sandcat’s hood lies a huge 6.7-litre V8 engine that only does around nine mpg, which is about as fuel-efficient as an F1 racing car.

Although the armoured car hasn’t seen any action, the force still believes it’s necessary to keep it.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said at the time: “The specialist vehicle can be used in a number of scenarios linked to a major incident and improves our options to keep people safe.

“While it has not yet been deployed to a major incident, it has been used for training purposes and it provides additional operational capabilities.”

Auto brand files for bankruptcy as CEO speaks out on final straw for business – and it could have domino effect

A MAJOR supplier to Nissan and Jeep owner Stellantis has filed for bankruptcy with its boss lashing out on the final straw.

The shock action taken by the Japanese-based car parts manufacturer has prompted fears of a domino effect.

Marelli Holdings Co. Ltd. yesterday announced that it has commenced voluntary chapter 11 cases[/caption]

Marelli Holdings Co. Ltd. yesterday announced that it had started voluntary chapter 11 cases in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

However, Marelli stressed that business will continue as usual.

It said in a statement that the global tech partner to the automotive industry planned to restructure its long-term debt obligations.

The filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection followed months of uncertainty about its talks with creditors.

Marelli said it had secured a commitment of $1.1 billion in financing from its lenders.

The brand supplies car interior and lighting parts for Nissan and Stellantis – whose portfolio includes iconic brands such as Abarth, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, Jeep, Maserati, and Vauxhall.

Marelli owes its two customers a combined $767 million in unsecured debts, according to the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition.

The firm has blamed Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs as being the final straw.

It said in the filing that the global trade war had affected its liquidity position.

This was due to the supplier’s import and export-focused business and the tariff burdens imposed on the automotive industry, it added.

Trump, 78, kicked off his second term with a controversial global trade war with nearly every country by instituting a minimum 10 per tariff on their exports into the US.

In March, he signed a proclamation to impose a 25% tariff on imports of automobiles and certain vehicle parts.

David Slump, Marelli’s boss, criticized the hike – amid growing uncertainty about Trump’s tariff rollercoaster, which has unnerved business chiefs.

He said the firm had been “severely affected by tariffs due to its import/export-focused business and the imposition of tariffs specifically against automotive manufacturers and suppliers.”

How does bankruptcy work?

Bankruptcy is a specific legal process that helps companies eliminate debt they can’t repay.

The process allows businesses to start fresh and gain access to new credit.

Supervised by federal courts, bankruptcies allow a company to sell off its assets more easily to pay off creditors, according to Investopedia.

Chapter 11, a common process for companies, is used to restructure a business with the goal of remaining open – even if it means selling off most of the company’s properties.

Chapter 7, on the other hand, sells all of a company’s assets, putting it out of business.

Chapter 15, alternatively, allows for collaboration between American and foreign courts to conduct bankruptcy proceedings with “parties of interest involving more than one country,” per the United States Courts.

BIG CASUALTY

The Wall Street Journal described the auto-parts bankruptcy as “the first big casualty” of the president’s tariff war.

It added that Marelli has been struggling with losses and a hefty debt load for years – ahead of Trump’s tariff changes.

But, Marelli’s court filing could signal the start of something ominous because the firm is regarded as a bellwether for the global auto industry, warned The Daily Mail.

UNDER PRESSURE

Automakers in the U.S. – including Nissan and Stellantis – are already facing pressure.

Car giant Stellantis last month announced a new CEO amid financial stress from increased tariffs and decreased sales.

Antonio Filosa, 51, will take on the role on June 23, the Associated Press said.

The U.S. Sun reported last October that Stellantis was cutting costs, and selling its 4,000-acre Arizona Proving Ground, 100 miles south of Las Vegas.

When the site is sold, Stellantis will instead use Toyota’s proving grounds in Arizona.

Stellantis, known for its European marques like Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Opel, saw earnings and sales dip last year.

Meanwhile, Nissan‘s CEO has also announced sweeping changes to its production and workforce as the auto company struggles to bring in sales.

The car manufacturer estimated a roughly $5 billion loss.

JOBS SLASHED

Nissan will be slashing nearly 15% of its global workforce — about 20,000 employees — after a steep decline in vehicle sales, as reported by The Associated Press.

“We have a mountain to climb,” admitted Nissan’s Chief Executive Ivan Espinosa.

The U.S. Sun has contacted Marelli, Nissan and Stellantis for comment.

Gutwrenching ‘homicide’ update over mysterious death of Yankees star Brett Gardner’s son, 14, at Costa Rican hotel

COSTA Rican authorities have yet to rule out homicide in the death of Brett Gardner’s son, Miller.

The 14-year-old boy died at a luxury resort in the country on March 21.

Initial theories suggested that severe food poisoning or an extreme reaction to medication could have been responsible for Miller’s death.

However, the investigation has yet to be closed nearly three months later as questions have yet to be answered.

“The purpose of the investigation is precisely to determine whether or not we are dealing with a possible homicide,” Sharon Hernandez Coto, a press officer from the Prosecutor’s Office of Costa Rica told ESPN.

“For this reason, it is not possible at this time to confirm or rule out that a crime has been committed.

“The aim is to determine whether it was a natural or homicidal death.”

Authorities are seeking to determine if it was a homicide in order to “establish responsibility.”

Hernandez Coto was unable to provide any further information about the investigation.

“The Quepos and Parrita Prosecutor’s Office indicated that it is not possible to provide more details beyond those already supplied, as the case is under investigation, a stage which is private for third parties,” she said.

“We appreciate your understanding.”

Upon ESPN’s probing, the prosecutors office did point towards a 33-page manual on Costa Rican criminal procedure.

The first stage details collection and analysis of evidence, warrants, and autopsies.

The second stage involves filing formal charges.

The third stage would involve a possible trial.

It isn’t clear which stage in the process authorities are at in the Gardner investigation.

‘Contaminated’ ice cream sold nationwide recalled over ‘life-threatening’ ingredient hidden inside – don’t trust label

Woman looking at frozen food in a grocery store freezer.

A POPULAR ice cream brand sold across the US has been urgently recalled after a “life-threatening” allergen was discovered in mislabeled tubs.

More than 6,600 containers of a Chocolate Truffle ice cream are being pulled from shelves due to undeclared almonds.

Over 6,600 Breyers Chocolate Truffle ice cream tubs have been recalled (stock image)[/caption]

Getty
The recall only affects one lot of 1.5-quart tubs, according to the manufacturer (stock image)[/caption]

The issue was disclosed by the US Food and Drug Administration in a June 10 alert.

Tubs of Breyers Chocolate Truffle Ice Cream, which are sold nationwide, were mistakenly filled with a different type of ice cream.

Specific locations where the mislabeled tubs were sold were not identified, per the FDA.

Due to a factory error, some cartons labeled Chocolate Truffle were mistakenly filled with Rocky Road ice cream, which contains almonds.

Unilever, which owns Breyers, initiated the recall on June 2 after discovering the label did not accurately reflect the contents inside.

While the tub said “may contain tree nuts,” the Rocky Road flavor listed almonds clearly on its lid, creating a dangerous mismatch.

“Rocky Road Ice was packaged with Chocolate Truffle Ice Cream labeled tub and a Rocky Road Ice Cream lid,” the FDA noted.

The agency classified the incidents as a Class II recall.

This means the product could cause temporary or medically reversible harm, though the risk of serious injury is considered remote.

Still, people with almond allergies face a serious threat if they consume the mislabeled product.

“People with an almond allergy should not consume the product due to risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction,” Breyers said in a statement.

“The safety and quality of our products is our top priority,” Unilever added.

The recall only affects one lot of 1.5-quart tubs, according to the manufacturer.

A report disclosed that “roughly 12” out of 6,668 recalled containers are believed to have been affected.

Recall Details

Breyers Ice Cream Warning:

  • Product: Rocky Road Ice Cream packaged in Chocolate Truffle tubs
  • Size: 1.5 quarts
  • Recall Number: H-0017-2025
  • Classification: Class II (may cause reversible or temporary health effects)
  • Lot Code: JUL1026GB3
  • UPC: 077567457288
  • Affected Quantity: 6,668 cases (about 12 tubs per case)
  • Issue: Undeclared almonds, tubs are mislabeled and may trigger allergic reactions
  • What to Do: Do not eat if allergic to almonds.

However, officials did not disclose exactly how many of the recalled containers had already been purchased or consumed.

The packaging confusion has sparked concern over whether allergy warnings are consistent and clearly displayed.

Tree nuts, like almonds, are one of the top eight allergens that must be declared on food packaging in the US.

In this case, the discrepancy between the tub and lid could mislead buyers with severe allergies.

The error follows another ice cream recall in May 2025 involving a separate brand.

Wells Enterprises recalled nearly 18,000 containers of ice cream and frozen yogurt due to the risk of hard plastic contamination.

That recall affected 22 different flavors of frozen desserts.

No illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection to either recall at this time.

The FDA continues to monitor the Breyers situation and has urged customers to double-check labels before consuming.

TELEVISION chef Rachael Ray has made a very rare red carpet appearance.

The TV chef looked incredibly happy and bright as she and her husband stepped out dressed to the nines.

The couple were at the 2025 North Shore Animal League America Celebration of Rescue at Tribeca 360 on June 12.

Rachael was seen wearing a silky black dress with a gold sequin-covered jacket.

Meanwhile, John wore a black jumper and trousers, complete with a checkered navy jacket.

Standing beside one another at the event, Rachael and John beamed for the camera.

In one snap, Rachael even held a dog up to the camera for a super sweet moment.

And in another, Rachel and John both held dogs as they grinned from ear-to-ear.

Rachael has long sparked concern about her health, with fans growing worried last year after she made an appearance on one of her top-rated cooking show.

PAST WORRY

In a clip for Rachael Ray in Tuscany last year, she appeared to be slurring her speech during the cooking show, which left fans rather worried.

“Omg is she ok? What happened?” one fan wrote on Instagram, sparking concern among others.

Another then commented, “This is concerning.

“Something is not right.”

A third expressed, “I love you but are you ok? I’m seriously concerned.”

Rachael did not address the concerns.

Rachael Ray Television Shows

Rachael Ray has been on TV since 2001, cooking up recipes and working with other celebrity chefs. Here are the TV programs that she has hosted

30 Minutes Meals – 2001 to 2012, Food Network

Rachael Ray – talk show, 2006 to 2023, ABC Network

Rachael’s Vacation – 2008, Food Network, five-part mini-series

Rachael Ray’s Week in a Day – reality TV cooking show, 2010, Food Network

Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off – co-hosted with Guy Fieri, 2012, Food Network

Rachael Ray in Tuscany – 2024 to present, USA Network

However, she did filter the comments on her videos instead.

POWER OF ATTORNEY

The U.S. Sun even reported Rachael filed for her husband to be her power of attorney decades before worry began.

The document reads, “The powers you grant below continue to be effective should you become disabled or incompetent.

“Caution: This is an important document. It gives the person whom you designate (your agent) broad powers to handle your property during your lifetime, which may include powers to mortgage, sell, or otherwise dispose of any real or personal property without advance notice to you or approval by you.

“These powers will continue to exist even after you become disabled or incompetent.”

The document continued, “This document does not authorize anyone to make medical or other health care decisions. You may execute a health care proxy to do this.”

Rachael only gave John authority for “real estate transactions.”

Rachael and John signed off on the document on July 19, 2005, just weeks before their September 24, 2005 wedding.

Williams’ Joopiter auction house has become renowned for selling items belonging to either the singer or his A-list pals.

The signed MJ card is set to become first sports item flogged by Joopiter.

It is set to hit the market with a $2 million starting price.

This is the highest quality Jordan Fleer rookie card to ever be sold publicly.

Per The Athletic, it has a mint 9 card grade and gem mint 10 autograph grade.

Jordan, 62, is said to have signed the card last year at his Florida golf course.

It is reported that he did so with a blue Sharpie pen.

The Chicago Bulls legend is said to have signed nine of the Fleer cards in one sitting.

The card is valued at somewhere between $2m and £3m.

Prince William enjoys impromptu pint at the pub with locals after braving the rain for muddy Dartmoor visit

PRINCE William enjoyed an impromptu pint during a muddy visit to Dartmoor yesterday.

The Duke of Cornwall braved heavy rain and wind to visit Royal Tor Bog, near Yelverton, Devon, and spoke to men and women working in collaboration to help restore the “special” landscape.

After working up a thirst, William headed to the Prince of Wales pub in the picturesque village of Princetown.

He sipped on a local cider at the bar and chatted to locals before making his way home.

The Prince’s project will focus on a “coordinated public and private investment” to restore peatlands and upland mosaic habitats in the south Devon area.

“I’m keen to continue my father’s work as well,” said William, who inherited responsibility for the land with the Duchy of Cornwall in 2022.

“For me it’s about the impact, I want to see stuff actually happen. We’ve done the talking now, we’ve put the vision together, the design, now it’s about the activation.”

Pointing to an area of bog which has been restored, he added: “Even though this is a small bit, we need to get more and more of this going on all around Dartmoor to bring it back to its former glory while still keeping the farming and everything else going.”

The Prince spoke out after discussing a new 20-year plan to give fresh life to Dartmoor’s wilderness while helping to protect it from climate change with a group including Tony Juniper, chair of Natural England and Phil Stocker, Chair of Dartmoor Land Use Management Group.

As they chatted in the steady downpour, the Prince joked: “I came to talk about the fires and a plan to re-wet peat!”

Referring to the Landscape Vision, he said: “To be able to bring everyone together, I think, is not only crucial to the whole thing but it sets a model for how it can be done elsewhere.

“And that’s what I love doing. Whatever we do here, other people can follow what we’re doing.

“So much of it is local leadership and collaboration. If you put those two together, things can be adapted.”

The Prince said not everyone believed the vision to restore the land within just two decades was possible.

“[They said] 20 years, good luck, it’s going to take longer than that! These things take time, they really do.

“But at least if you set up a path and move in that direction, everyone will move in the same direction.”

The Prince heard from Stocker how they had been “making progress” in bringing different people on board with the plan.

“The one thing that has come through is the enthusiasm,” Phil said.

Morag Angus, of the South West Peatland Partnership, told William how the land they were looking at had become more barren and dry and was benefitting from a “re-wetting” process.

She said afterwards: “If someone like the Prince is coming down here, it just shows that he’s thinking about it and how important is.

“And I think it just galvanizes everyone and gets everyone on board and gets them coming here to talk about it, but also to make sure we action things and we make meaningful restoration happen.

“See it happening, rather than just talking about it.”
