Aldi replacing Winn-Dixie after grocery chain confirmed brand new location in vacant spot

ALDI will open a new store at a former Winn-Dixie by the end of fall, the company confirmed this week.

The German discount grocer will give the vacant site a makeover before opening its doors at Florida‘s Ormond Beach Shopping Center.

The new store is taking over approximately 38 per cent of the vacant 62,377-square-foot Winn-Dixie at 353 W. Granada Blvd., leaving the rest of the space available for other tenants.

Matt Thon, regional vice president for Aldi, told The Daytona Beach News-Journal: “We plan to welcome Aldi to the Ormond Beach community by the end of fall.

“Shoppers will find organic meats, fresh produce, sustainable seafood, unbeatable cheese and wine selections, and food for every taste and lifestyle, from gluten-free to plant-based.”

It’s a strategic move for the retailer, which continues to plant its flag across the Volusia-Flagler area – and it couldn’t come soon enough for locals.

Debbie Cotton, president and CEO of the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce, said: “I think this community in that area of town needs a grocery store and Aldi has a lot of fans in Ormond Beach.

“We’re looking forward to (the new) Aldi being a part of our Ormond Beach community.”

The west-end spot, known as the “Gateway to Historic Ormond Beach”, has been without a major grocer since Winn-Dixie shut its doors in December 2024.

That store had been a staple in the shopping center since it opened in 1984.

The estimated cost to build out the new Aldi is around $1.7million, according to the city’s building permit.

This will be Aldi’s second outpost in Ormond Beach.

Its first, which opened in September 2019, is located three miles east in the Shoppes on Granada, near Lowe’s Home Improvement.

The expansion is part of Aldi’s aggressive growth strategy nationwide.

The chain – already the fastest-growing retailer in the US – opened a store in Deltona in May and has also set up shop in Port Orange.

Aldi currently operates 12 stores in Volusia and Flagler counties.

The new Ormond Beach and Port Orange stores will push that total to 15 and bring the company a step closer to its goal of 800 US stores by the end of 2028.

Aldi once owned Winn-Dixie—briefly.

The chain bought Jacksonville-based Winn-Dixie last year, converting select locations to Aldi stores, including the ones in Ormond Beach and Port Orange.

Earlier this year, Aldi sold the rest of the Winn-Dixie portfolio to a group of private investors.

How many Aldi stores are there in the US?

AS of May 12, 2025, there are 2,510 Aldi stores operating across 41 states and territories in the United States.

Florida leads with 244 locations, followed by Illinois (215), Ohio (170).

In 2025, the company plans to open 225 new stores.
