The Subversive Joy of BookTok

My professional life revolves around reading and writing books. But for years, I carried a little secret: I didn’t read much for fun or pleasure. This wasn’t always the case. As a teen I devoured books, and my library card was my most prized possession. In college, I passed the slow hours of my part-time […]

US Open release incredible video of army of lawnmowers to tackle rough as stars brand conditions ‘unplayable’

EVEN the world’s best players are going to struggle to get out of the rough as the US Open tees off at Oakmont this week.

The PGA Tour‘s top hitters will battle it out around the Pennsylvania course starting this Thursday – and a video of the thick rough being tamed by greenkeepers has shown just how tricky it will be.

An army of Oakmont Country Club greenkeeper armed with lawnmowers have been wading through the rough to try and make things slightly earier.

But the conditions still appear to be about as tough as it gets, with players aware they will need to do everything they can to keep the ball on the fairway in the year’s third major.

Videos circulating on social media show that a ball dropped from knee height into the rough is almost completely lost in the thick stuff.

While players have voiced their concerns for just how difficult it will be to play in the conditions this week.

Tyrrell Hatton shared a video of a practice round that showed him struggling to even see his ball in the long grass.

And the world number 24 had to give it his all just to be able to knock the ball back onto the fairway with a wedge in hand.

Two-time US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau told his YouTube channel: “This course doesn’t just challenge your game, it challenges your sanity.”

Adding: “This is the hardest this golf course could ever play right now.”

While three-time major champion Jordan Spieth said: “This course is built to be like this.

“So they’re not doing a whole lot different to the golf course.

“You hit a good shot, you get rewarded for it here. And if you don’t, you’re in big trouble. It’s pure golf, no funny business about it.”

Jhonattan Vegas, who finished T5 at the PGA Championship last month, even branded the rough as “unplayable”.

The USGA have been criticised in recent years for making the US Open courses too hard, but some fans enjoy seeing the top pros battle to make par – seeing it as more familiar to their own game.

The rough on Oakmont stands at 5 INCHES tall, with the course trimmed to ensure that is uniform throughout all 18 holes.

The course crew have detailed that they even mow the grass in a specific way to ensure it doesn’t lay over itself and allow the ball to rest on top – making the rough is as punishing as possible.

All 156 players will take swing at trying to beat the course when the action gets underway on Thursday.

World number one Scottie Scheffler remains the favourite to lift the trophy after he earned his third major title at the PGA Championship in North Carolina last month.

While DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, John Rahm and Ludvig Aberg are all amongst the top contenders for the title too.

In a Q&A with fans on Instagram last night, she revealed she can’t say much for “legal reasons” but insisted she’s never been so happy to be single.

Having ‘rediscovered’ herself, Belle appeared to confirm a return to Love Island in the New Year.

When a fan asked if she was doing All Stars, she replied with a selfie and a large side eye emoji suggesting wheels are in motion behind the scenes.

Earlier this year, the makeup artist, 27, told fans she’d experienced six weeks of alleged emotional abuse that left her feeling at an all time low.

A source told The Sun at the time: “Belle is no longer with Luke.

“She’s back in London while she processes everything that has happened recently and is focusing on her wellbeing after the split.”

When a fan asked how she was, Belle wrote: “I’m probably at the lowest point I’ve been in my life and I genuinely don’t know how to pull myself out.

“I can’t even pull myself out of bed, and have been like this for about 6 weeks, when I tell you emotional abuse is no joke I mean it!

“I wouldn’t wish what has been done to me on my worst enemy.

“For the first time in my life I’ve been faced with a situation I have no idea how to deal with and I know usually it’s me on here giving all the advice but I don’t wanna sit here and lie and say I know I’ll be fine because this time I’m not sure if I will be.

“I can promise I am trying my best to get better but this one’s gna be a process.”

The pair became an item late in 2023 just as Belle, who previously dated Anton Danyluk, was asked to sign up for Love Island All Stars.

She called Luke a “gift from the universe” and said: “He ticks every checklist I have, he’s completely my type to a T, personality, looks everything.”

Londoner Belle relocated to Edinburgh to live with the sports star and opened a beauty salon in the city.

Luke previously praised Belle for supporting his career and shared details of winning her hardman actor dad Tamer’s approval.

He told us: “She’s starting to realise how sore you are after the games!

“She’s got a big job keeping me fed but she’s doing a good job so far.

“She loves rugby now and her dad loves it as well, and her mum, so they’re big supporters.

“I get along well with her dad. He’s a tough man, like!

“One of the first times I met him he wanted to make sure I could protect his daughter so it turned into a little sparring match at Christmas. I passed the test!

“You wouldn’t hear the end of that if I’d knocked him out!”
