What are the symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease, and how is it caught?

A POTENTIALLY fatal disease has cropped up in daycares across the US, putting children at risk.

Public health officials have announced that hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) has been detected in day cares, and parents have been left wondering what signs to look out for.

HMFD is a mild illness that is caused by viruses and is most often seen in children under five.

It should not be confused with foot and mouth disease which affects farm animals.

Earlier this year, there were six outbreaks in Virginia, according to an alert published by the Fairfax County Health District.

According to the US Virgin Islands Department of Health, there have been 189 confirmed cases in St Thomas, including one possible infection that proved fatal.

As the risk of the disease being potentially fatal, it is important to know the signs of HFMD.

What are the symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease?

The symptoms of HFMD appear in two stages.

The first symptoms which appear for the illness are commonly a sore throat, high temperature, and a lack of appetite.

From there, children may develop second-stage symptoms such as mouth ulcers and raised spots, which look like rashes on their hands and feet, and potentially the groin area.

These spots look red and inflamed and can turn into blisters, causing children a lot of pain.

The symptoms are the same for adults and children.

How is hand, food and mouth disease transmitted?

HFMD cases peak in the summer, due to the higher humidity promoting the virus’ survival and also the higher chance of exposure.

It is a highly contagious disease and can be caught from droplets from sneezing, coughing, or talking.

It is spread through droplets and fluid from the infected

As a result, it can also be caught from surfaces where the viral droplets have landed, meaning schools and day care centers are potentially high-risk areas.

Furthermore, the fluid from blisters or faecal matter can also carry the sickness.

Board-certified doctor who shares medical information of TikTok, Dr. Sood, warned of the potential risk of one commonly used item.

In a video Dr. Sood reacted to a woman putting her toddler in a shopping cart and later ending up with HFMD.

Doctors have also warned that caregivers should try not to hug or kiss children who are infected, in order to prevent infection.

People suffering from HFMD should be kept at home and take over-the-counter pain medications.

How to treat hand, foot and mouth disease

The symptoms of HFMD usually last for about seven to ten days, and they can be treated with paracetamol or ibuprofen to help ease a sore mouth or throat.

However there are also some other remedies.

Because they might have sores in their mouths, it’s important to try and force children to drink water so they aren’t dehydrated.

It is recommended that those with the disease drink cool fluids to soothe the mouth and prevent dehydration (but avoid acidic drinks, such as fruit juice).

They should also eat soft foods like yoghurt and avoid hot, salty and spicy foods.

Brand new blue TSA sign to look out for in airports from this week – following it ‘will speed up screening

A BRAND new TSA system is being rolled out as the transport body hopes to “speed up screening”.

The scheme has already been rolled out at three airports, with another major site being added to the list today.

The Families on the Fly campaign is designed to make it easier for families to travel, particularly if they have strollers and backpacks.

New signs indicate lanes which act as a fast track for those families.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) hopes that the system will reduce family stress while maintaining high levels of safety.

Also, the Family on the Fly scheme will include discounted TSA PreCheck fees for families and dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes for service members and their families.

Now, the system is being rolled out at yet another airport.

The John Wayne Airport in California is the latest site to benefit from the scheme.

A spokesperson from TSA said: “When families arrive at John Wayne Airport (SNA), they will find a specially designated lane for them at the centrally located Checkpoint B.

“With Southern California being one of the top tourist destinations in the U.S. for vacationing families, I am excited that we can now expedite their screening process and enhance their overall airport experience.”

Other airports benefiting from the new plan include Orlando International Airport, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu and the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in North Carolina.

The news comes after John Wayne Airport added a brand new Mamava Lactation Pod in Terminal C.

The area is directly next to baggage claim, allowing moms to feed their children straight after getting off a flight.

Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley said: “You can go in there, it’s private, it’s comfortable, air-conditioned, there’s ventilation, you’ve got all out outlets, you can bring your stroller in.”

Terminal B has a nursing lounge too.

Also, TSA has raised “significant” concerns about a proposed bill to allow passengers to avoid using A.I., face recognition technology at border crossings.

Politicians have said that people should be able to opt for a face-to-face check with a border officer, instead of using the facial scanner.

Also, senators have pushed to limit how much data would be stored by airports using the tech.

However, a text seen by Politico says that TSA has “significant” concerns about how this could affect safety in airports.

LOVE Island USA fans have swooned over an axed cast member’s mother after she revealed her ageless parent on social media.

Cierra, who was sent home just one week before the finale, uploaded a video of her and her mom shaking hands while miming to the hit Illegal by PinkPantheress.

“Baddie runs in the bloodline,” she said in the caption.

Fans then went wild in the comments section, with many quick to swoon over the reality star and her mother.

“MOM what did she have you when she was an infant?!?!??” asked one person.

“YOUR MOM? She is giving sister LOL,” said another.

“Wait your mom is hot af?!!!” exclaimed a third.

‘DEFINITION OF A BOMBSHELL’

A fourth added, “Mom should’ve been on Love Island.”

“Damn if you would’ve made it to the parent episode she would’ve went viral,” wrote a fifth.

“Ur mom is the definition of bombshell,” said a sixth.

“I thought that was your homegirl…momma,” wrote a seventh.

While an eighth added, “Mom looks younger than daughter.”

Cierra was axed from the show after an Instagram story from her account resurfaced on social media, with fans quickly calling for her to be kicked out.

The post read, “Botox isn’t for everyone but I love it for me!!!

“I am incredibly expressive with my face and I catch myself frowning for no reason throughout the day when I’m focusing on something or thinking too hard lol.

I am deeply, truly, honestly, so sorry. I had no idea that the word held as much pain, as much harm, and came with the history that it did, or I never would have used it.

Cierra Ortega

“I can also be a little ch***y when I laugh/smile so I love getting a mini brow lift to open up my eyes and get that snatched look.

“This is not me encouraging but more so sharing.”

CIERRA’S EXIT AND APOLOGY

She apologized in a video for the racial slur, as she said “I want to first start by addressing, not just anyone that I have hurt or deeply offended, but most importantly, the entire Asian community.

“I am deeply, truly, honestly, so sorry. I had no idea that the word held as much pain, as much harm, and came with the history that it did, or I never would have used it.

“I had no ill intention when I was using it. But that’s absolutely no excuse, because intent doesn’t excuse ignorance.”

A source previously told The U.S. Sun that Cierra attempted to apologize to avoid going home

The production insider told The U.S. Sun, “We had to tell her to exit the show, as what happened would have created a lot of prejudice and it’s the kind of behavior that is simply unacceptable.

“She didn’t want to leave the show and tried to apologize for what she did. We decided that apologies aren’t enough for topics like this. She got upset when we told her that she had to leave the show as soon as possible.”

At first, Cierra “thought she could save her spot on the show.”

“It was never an option and we had to decide quickly and inform her so she could start getting ready to get out,” the source claimed. “Cierra was against leaving the show at first, and thought an apology would be enough, but it doesn’t work like this.

“She felt bad, she was very upset but we had to let her go, as we can’t have a bad image and allow people use such unacceptable words and racial slurs.”

Heart-stopping footage shows daring Ukrainian raid that killed 330 Russians & used dragon drones to halt Vlad’s advance

THIS is the heart-stopping moment a daring Ukrainian raid kills over 330 Russian troops.

Valiant Ukrainian fighters swooped in behind enemy lines in helicopters before launching a targeted attack using dragon drones, assault rifles, machine guns and grenade launchers.

Dragon drones appeared to be used as footage showed them spitting out a fiery stream of thermite[/caption]

Kyiv’s defence intelligence (HUR) pulled off the calculated strikes as they battled back against a Russian advance in Sumy.

The HUR said they stopped Vladimir Putin‘s troops “cold” when troops from its elite Timur unit infiltrated enemy positions in a woodland area.

Hundreds of Vlad’s men were caught off guard as close-quarter fighting erupted alongside co-ordinated drone and artillery strikes from above.

Dramatic footage shows how Ukraine pounded Russians lurking behind trees with strikes as huge explosions and screams ring out.

Troops in Timur then rushed into the battlefield in open-top trucks as they chucked drones from their hands at the cowering enemy.

Ukrainian “dragon drones” were also on show during the blitz as they spitted out a fiery stream of thermite onto the Russian-held treeline.

The drone left behind a trail of fire as it spewed out sparks believed to contain thermite, which is made up of iron oxide and aluminium.

Thermite weapons have been favoured by Ukrainian drone operators as the scorching hot molten iron that burns at 2,500 degrees can kick-start fires and destroy Russian weapons and expose their positions.

At least 334 Russian troops were killed and over 550 wounded, according to HUR.

Audio from the daring mission picked up the soldiers signing off the video by saying: “The armed struggle continues! Glory to Ukraine!”

The attacks were carried out by several forces within Ukraine’s brave military.

These included the Chymera, Yunger, Stugna, Siberian Battalion, Aratta, 1514, Paragon, Art Division, First Line, Raven Group, and 6th Special Operations Unit.

HUR said the operations not only halted Russia‘s Sumy advance and eliminated hundreds of troops but also disrupted Russian supplies of food and ammunition.

No indication of the date or exact location of the blitz has been given yet.

But Severnnyi, a Russian military blogger, announced on Monday that Moscow’s forces had been surrounded in the Oleksiivka area.

He said: “They have us trapped. Water on three sides, and Ukrainians on the fourth.”

It is unclear if this is the same attack by Timur forces.

The elite unit is an umbrella command within HUR who are in charge of a number of specialised Ukrainian forces.

The group is named after leader Lieutenant-Colonel Timur.

He became a hero in his home country after planting a Ukrainian flag in Crimea for the first time in 10 years during a special operation in August 2024.

It comes as the conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate with the death toll on both sides increasing.

Over 1,059,000 Russian fighters have been eliminated since February 2022, say Ukraine.

With Ukrainian civilians being targeted in deadly missile barrages almost every night across the country’s major cities – including Kyiv.

Donald Trump is now set to “go ballistic” if Putin doesn’t agree to a last-minute peace deal this week to finally end the fighting.

Us special envoy Steve Witkoff landed in Moscow earlier today for a showdown two days before the expiry of a deadline set by Trump and the threat of a new sledgehammer sanctions.

A source close to the US administration told the Financial Times: “If Witkoff comes back empty-handed, with absolutely nothing, Trump is going to go ballistic.”

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has previously warned: “Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war.”

It comes a day after Russia declared there are now “no limits” on its deployment of nuclear missiles.

In a warning to the West, Moscow vowed to match any US and Nato moves with force – reigniting fears of a Cold War-style arms race.

Meanwhile, Trump ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned near Russia in case “foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that”.

Will there be peace in Ukraine?

THE prospect of peace in Ukraine remains uncertain as the Russia-Ukraine war continues into its fourth year.

Recent US-brokered talks, including direct negotiations in Istanbul on May 16 and June 2, 2025, have yielded no breakthroughs, though agreements on prisoner exchanges signal some dialogue.

US President Donald Trump has pushed for a ceasefire, shortening a 50-day deadline for Russia to negotiate or face sanctions, but tensions persist with Russian advances in eastern Ukraine and intensified drone and missile strikes on cities like Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested territorial swaps, while Russia shows little willingness to compromise.

With ongoing military escalation and divergent American and European approaches, a lasting peace deal appears distant.
