Baker Mayfield handed $30 million bonus by Tampa Bay Buccaneers in rare NFL decision

NFL star quarterback Baker Mayfield received a sizeable bonus from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a shock decision.

The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback received guaranteed money in the 2026 season.

Mayfield signed a three-year, $100 million contract extension to stay with the Buccaneers during the 2023 season.

However, the deal didn’t guarantee any money he’s set to receive in the final year of the contract.

Last week, Bucs general manager Jason Licht revealed that the team had intentions of extending Mayfield’s contract.

However, Tampa Bay has first reworked Mayfield’s contract to guarantee him $30 million for the 2026-27 campaign, per ESPN.

The length of Mayfield’s contract has remained the same.

Licht said last week that the aim is for the two sides to “reach an extension when the time is right and he continues to be our quarterback for a long time.”

Mayfield recently shared his thoughts on his reworked contract and status with the Buccaneers.

“Right now, I’m under contract through ’26,” Mayfield told CBS.

“So it was really just about getting guaranteed money for ’26, and they did that. And that’s all I can ask for.

“I signed the contract, I knew what it was. Right now, it’s winning. I know good things will happen after that.

Mayfield continued, “I trust this place. I love being here. Obviously, used to bouncing around. I’ve done that before, but I don’t want to leave.

“It’s how can we win right now?

“We have a team that’s really, really well built and [General Manager Jason Licht] and those guys did it.

“So, if we win right now good things will happen.“

Mayfield signed a one-year, $4 million prove-it deal with the franchise in the 2023 offseason.

He’d produce career-highs in completion percentage (71.4), passing yards (4,500), and touchdowns (41) while leading the Bucs to the playoffs for a second straight season.

Mayfield seems to have found his home with his fourth franchise since entering the NFL.

He had spent the four seasons of his career with the Cleveland Browns before being traded to the Carolina Panthers in the summer of 2022.

The Panthers released Mayfield during that campaign before the Los Angeles Rams claimed him off waivers.
