Officials have declared parts of Bangkok’s Nong Chok district rabies-infectious zones after a dog tested positive, triggering strict controls on animal movement.

The Area 10 office of the Department of Livestock Development (DLD) announced yesterday, September 17, that the zones have been designated rabies infectious areas until October 16. Under the order, no live animals, particularly dogs, or their carcasses can be moved in or out without written permission from a licensed veterinarian.

Officials warned that owners must report sick or dead animals within 12 hours. Failure to comply could result in penalties, as the restrictions aim to contain the spread of the disease and protect both pets and residents.

The declared zones stretch across Kok Faed in Nong Chok, extending north to Khu subdistrict, south to Lam Pla Thieu, Lam Phak Chee and Tap Yao in Lat Krabang, east to Krathum Rai, and west to Saen Saeb in Min Buri.

Residents living within a 5-kilometre radius of Ban Kok Faed, where the infected dog carcass was discovered, have been advised to steer clear of stray animals and report unusual behaviour in pets. Local officials are also stepping up vaccination drives for dogs and cats across the district.

Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but it can be prevented with timely vaccination. Thailand has made significant progress in reducing rabies cases in recent years, yet sporadic outbreaks still occur when infected animals come into contact with unvaccinated strays or pets.

Livestock officials said the temporary restrictions were necessary to ensure public safety. The DLD has urged cooperation from animal owners, reminding them that preventing the spread of rabies requires vigilance at the community level.

Public health campaigns are expected to intensify in the coming weeks, with veterinarians providing free vaccinations in high-risk areas, reported Thai PBS World.

Officials stressed that the declaration is precautionary but essential to stopping the virus from spreading beyond Nong Chok.

The order will remain in force until mid-October, though officials may extend it if further cases are detected.
