Beloved off-price chains including TJ Maxx and JCPenney to close over 30 stores

RETAILERS across the country are suffering store closures, including TJ Maxx, JCPenney, At Home and That’s Cheap!.

All four chains announced closures recently due to a variety of reasons, which has put thousands of jobs at risk.

American retailers are struggling right now, and with the rising pressure of things like tariffs and shifting consumer spending habits, it is becoming harder to stay afloat.

TJ MAXX

At the end of September, TJ Maxx announced that it will be closing one of its locations in Boston, Massachusetts.

The three-story store will permanently shut down on January 3, 2026.

The store has been open since 2016, and the announcement means that over 100 employees will lose their jobs.

A TJ Maxx spokesperson told The U.S. Sun that this decision came after a review of its operation.

They said: “We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies and our decision to close this store reflects that thinking.

“The Boston area has been the home for our headquarters for nearly 50 years and continues to be a very important market for us.”

The store marks one of four current TJ Maxx locations, soon to be three.

The company also recently opened three stores in New Hampshire, California and Washington D.C.

Another will open in Riverbank, California on October 9, and in Batesville, Mississippi on October 19.

Another store is coming to Victor, New York  on October 23.

JCPENNEY

JCPenney has been forced to shut over 200 locations this year following its bankruptcy filing.

In late August, liquidation sales were announced at two further locations in Pennsylvania and California.

At the Pennsylvania store shoppers can still save up to 70% on all of the merchandise, as well as store equipment.

BRANDS HARD HIT BY BANKRUPTCIES

Many chains have struggled to adapt to a post-Covid retail landscape, with several companies filing for bankruptcy

JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts announced it would close all 800 stores after filing for bankruptcy twice in a year.

Hooters announced plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February.

Liberated Brands announced that it would be closing all 122 retail locations for its boardsport fashion brands Quiksilver, Billabong, and Volcom.

Forever 21 shut down its headquarters after filing for bankruptcy and laying off 358 employees.

Macy’s announced major restructuring plans amid mass store closures.

Only a fall 2025 closing window is known so far for the Pennsylvania spot.

The California store, which has been open for 32 years, will close to the public on November 19.

It will then close fully on November 21.

Leading up to the closures, massive liquidation sales were being held at all of the At Home stores.

THAT’S CHEAP!

The discount chain That’s Cheap! announced at the end of last month that it had closed half of its total store count.

This included a store in Orangevale, California store and two stores in Sacramento, California.

But the chain has teased a future despite the closures.

On social media, the Sacramento store posted: “We are officially closed at this location, but we have exciting things in the works!

“We hope you can follow along to join us soon!”

The Orangevale store’s Instagram page also posted that something was coming soon following its closure.
