Several children were shot during a Mass at the school, which serves preschool up to eighth grade in southern Minneapolis.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the black-clad shooter was targeting students in a “deliberate act of violence.”
An eight-year-old and a ten-year-old child were killed, O’Hara said.
Police said 17 other people were shot, 14 of whom are children. Two children are in critical condition.
As students evacuated the school, witnesses reported seeing victims in shock at the scene, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
The outlet reported that as young children filed out of the school building, a little boy was heard saying to his dad, “I don’t feel safe.”
Another little boy was seen holding a stuffed animal as he left the crime scene.
The unidentified shooter is dead, police said.
He was in his early 20s and carrying multiple weapons.
